We were subject to a DDoS attack. (read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack )

Fortunately I was able to get in touch with our hosting provider and as a result we have had a hardware firewall installed on the server which almost immediately mitigated the attack.

We also know entirely who is responsible and we will be pursuing the matter further.
