One of the guys on that team had 'allegedly' borrowed the marker from somebody on a NXL team and the robot caught it hence the DQ.
I know where the offending marker came from but it serves no purpose for me to say.

If the 'borrowed' bit is true, then you mighta thought that after using it for a bit, he mighta guessed something was up but hey what do I know

What is the "right" penalty for getting caught with an illegal marker?

NPPL's rule requires disqualification from the tournament, as seen here.

Millennium's current 7-player rules call for suspension of the player (with no subsequent short play) and forfeiting of the game (0 - 100) in which the gun was caught.

EXL/NXL/Open/Division X Ball rules call for a "match misconduct" penalty in which the offending player is penalized for at least half a game while a major (five-minute) penalty is served by another player and the team plays short-handed during that penalty.

I don't know what the PSP 5 & 10 rules are because I can't find their rulebook anywhere on the Internet.

What do y'all think the penalties should be?

well, from the little information that I've seen, DQing the team seems like the right thing to do. It's severe, yes. But the players and teams have the responsibility to know what they are bringing on the field.

This board looks like it was specifically designed to ramp from what they are saying. If they know that it adds X amount of shots at Y rof, that means it's programmed to do it, and it's not just bouncing. Thus, it's not just an accident, it was intentional.

Now, yeah, maybe it was borrowed, but that doesn't get you by. You need to KNOW that what you've got is legal, that's your responsibility as a player and team.

I hate to see it be that rough, but this will certainly help to discourage that junk from continuing.

Go NPPL.

If it truly was a gun cheat, then the NPPL got it right; DQ the whole team so that the penalty has a real impact. It's doubtful that any team, or their sponsors, will put up with that more than once.

The only thing that scares me is going from totally out of control to extremely severe.

I kinda think the Millennium 7-player rule would be good if we added short-handed play for the remainder of the tournament and went to the NPPL rule for second offense.

This is definitely no exact science.

Why, because it's not as serious the first time they get caught cheating???

From Warpig:

Both Friday and Saturday's games were met with good weather. Through the prelims, NPPL Scrutineer Dave Zinkham put the league's trigger pulling robot to use testing suspect paintguns by pulling the trigger at preset rates and measuring the velocities and number of shots fired. According to Zinkham he had tested over 40 paintguns from Friday through Saturday morning. During the prelims on Saturday he stated that he selected a suspect paintgun for testing based on observations that the player using it would fire one or two shots into his bunker after ticking back in. After testing, Zinkham reported that the suspect paintgun would fire 8 shots when the trigger was pulled 6 times at 12 or 14 cycles per second, and added a single shot when pulled at 16 or 18 cycles per second. This performance was a violation of NPPL rule 11.01 which limits paintguns to pump or semi-automatic (each trigger pull results in a single firing cycle) modes only. The resulting penalty disqualified Redz Hurricanes from the tournament canceling out points earned at the Tampa event as per rule 10.55. According to Zinkham, the paintgun, a NYX edition DM4 was held for further investigation.

 I didn't know when making my first post, but funny how this ties into recent discussions huh?

So the robot does work... and many of the 'cheater modes' aren't switched 'on and off'... (currently anyway!)

Things become more interesting...
