The rules state:
4.62 Teams will qualify for the semi-final round in the following manner:
(1) If there are less than 8 teams in the classification (Pro, Amateur, Novice, or Rookie), there will be no semi final round and the top four teams will qualify and play in the final round.
(2) If there are between 8 and 30 teams, inclusive, in the classification, the top 8 teams therein will qualify and play in the semi final round.
(3) If there are more than 30 teams in the classification, the top 16 teams will qualify and play in the semi final round.
BTW: The rules should state quarter finals, not semi final.
Perhaps the rules were changed at Miami, I unfortunately did not make the captain's meeting this time around. This may have been the first time that the pros had over 21 teams, but it was not the first time that the Amateur division had over 21 teams. I just found it strange that the Amateurs played for 8 spots all season long then at Miami 12 are taken through when the number of teams had not risen.
Maybe this is to help eliminate any fluctuations in the scheduling where one team gets an easy draw and another team does not. Even though a draw can be more difficult, if a team is playing well at the event they should still make it through when more then %50 of the teams go through. Or it could be to give teams more game time, or to align with the millennium (as Baca has mentioned) which makes sense because that's how it was when we played Portugal and France.
I think I'll email the NPPL and post their response.
Thanks,
