Wiping paint to pretend not to have been hit is cheating

Ill leave it to the tournament crowd to say how common it is

Wiping in a tournament and getting caught will get both you and your team mates out
To lose a game because someone wiped and multiple players put out wont make the wiper popular
In high level tournaments its a risk taken by players - and there are things at stake such as a high value prize, keeping in the tournament and keeping your sponsors name in view etc
Wiping on a recreational basis is a bit sad

In scenario and big games it does happen. The individual does not want to be out, or in games a number of years back you probably had to walk a long way to respawn
It's still cheating

In scenario you can wipe without cheating by using a medic, go to the medic or have the medic come to you and 'tap' back in game, so you need to wipe off the hit
It's common to wipe off on the way back to respawn as well - strictly speaking you shouldn't until you get to spawn

In my experience it happens quite a lot. At walk-ons events it is usually limited to a very small minority, at Big Games it depends on how well organized the event is but tends to happen less with infinite respawns usually only a short walk away. In tournament paintball well most people think there are three teams on the field and you have to play them all.

It's frustrating as I heard people on my team saying "if they're cheating then I'm going to"

To be honest cheating will always be present, there is less cheating at friendly events where the teams all talk.
I played & reffed yesterday & some people blatantly cheat as in playing on till a red calls them out rather than walking when they feel the hit, they get 1-4-1 penaltys but often I notice players look totally surprised when you call them out. Generally the lesser experienced players don't hear a pack shot or feel a skim on a loose tab of clothing.

Wiping is rare with good refs as 3-4-1 penaltys basically mean you just lost the game for your team!

Thats why in tournament paintball, you make sure they are out ;) This is why it annoys me that we have an over shooting rule, which wouldnt be needed if some players just left the field when they are supposed to :)

I love it when people cheat, it fires me up, and I see it as a challenge :D

I've experienced cheating in my old division first hand, just frustrated cheaters, something which will always happen unfortunately as it does ruin the game and put people at a disadvantage...
