new fill nipple but ermmm.....

turns out that after getting my new air sytem i need a new fill nipple but something that i have noticed is that around my fill nipple there is a black sort of material, i was wondering if this is essential or whether it is unessacary as wehn i get a new fill nipple it will not come with that on (I guess) if i do need it what is it and where can i get it from.

think that black material wud be the stuff that stops it leaking from the threads bit like ptfe tape but liquid stuff.
