Generally the stuff you need to know will be picked up with experience :)

Make sure you check out all the local fields. Some are better than others. Are you looking at getting your own kit?

1) Find your local paintball field and ask if you can rent and join a private group, or, rent and play with the walk-ons. The walk-ons should be more helpful if you just ask them the same thing you asked here.
2) IF you like it, which you will, set a budget for yourself and purchase a modest marker and decent goggles.
3) Don't go spending a ton on clothes until you get hooked and understand the game more. EVERYONE ends up wanting something different.
4) After you go play, come back to the forum and ask something more specific in your post like "Electronic vs Mechanical Marker?" This will give you more feedback you need for a more informed decision. Also, since your new and unless you have an unlimited budget, always say how much your willing to spend when you ask for advice, otherwise everyone will suggest you buy a 900 pound marker.

Good luck and welcome to the most addicting money sucking sport their is...
