Near Miss on a Scam

Around the beginning of January I posted up my Ion for sale in Classifieds and not long after this I received an email from a man named Bill Winston who expressed his interest and said he was able to pay right away.

At first I thought this a little weird, that he was not from these forums nor did he seem too knowledgable about paintball either, but I continued nonetheless. The next email I received contained the follows:

concerning the collection, i will be responsible for it, because my agent will come on ground for the pick-up and have a closer look at it
i will contact my client immediately that owes me 3,300Pounds and i will instruct him to pay you on my behalf
I will like you to await the cheque soon and as soon as you receive the cheque, deduct the amount for the lon and forward the remaining balance to my agent for collection
This set of alarm bells for me, as every single part of this seemed like a scam but I continued, as I thought providing the cheque was OK and cleared without a problem, the money was in my hands and the Ion as good as sold.

So, I receive an envelope from him this morning with a Spanish postmark on it and the address written in scrawny handwriting, which I would not expect from somebody who has "agents" to pick goods up for him. Contained within the envelope was a cheque for £4,500(!). Adding to that, he had spelt my name wrong (which I had typed out for him correctly many times) and the signature also looked slightly dodgy.

From what I've now discovered, if I were to proceed to cash this cheque it is not likely to clear and if it does, the money may later be removed if the cheque was found to be fraudulent.

I will be sending him an email to cancel the transaction later, as well as emailing a scanned image of the cheque to the corresponding bank to check its validity.

The reason I've explained the different parts of this scam is to make everybody here aware that these sort of people operate even on these forums, so to beware if an offer of a similiar nature should be emailed to them.

Cheques are going out of date as they so easy to forge and mislead. A good tip here is to say you dont accept cheques. Lemonadex is right, be careful everyone!

Nige, I only advertised it for sale on these forums, which is why it's kinda scary to think that even these forums are being patrolled by scammers.

hey,

someone tried the same thing on me. When i was selling my old tippmann i posted it up here and on pbnation (why i'll never know). Sure enough 2 weeks later i recieved an email from a "Teddy" living in Germany. Fair enough i thought, i know they have strict rules regarding K class markers (and from what i understand Germans can only buy brass eagle markers domestically) i'm happy to deal with this guy.
I recieved emails from him, he kept calling it a gun - but i guess he was after his first marker or something. He then told me about his "friend" who lived in central london who would be taking collection of said "gun" by visiting my house (which i was unaware of when we set up guidelines for the transaction) as well as taking collection of excess cash in the cheque - ironically he said he wouldn't use paypal as he was wary of scammers. This was after i had given my postal address mind. Several days after i provided him with my address i recieved a cheque for £1,800; i instantly emailed him when i saw how russian sounding the name was on the cheque, and how it was for about £1,600 in excess of what i was after for the marker. I ripped the cheque in half, told him so, and when he threatened to come to my home, i simply threatened to send all corespondance and the cheque to the authorities - i havn't heard from him since.
