Yeah, I got it too... someone been hacking the database? Hmmm.... Or floggin it to the highest bidder!

the jist of the e-mail is:
Subject: Re: Fwd: PLEEEEEEASE READ!!!! it was on the news! ASAP

Then there's a list of a shed load of P8 members and the rest of the e-mail is garbage with one line saying: Note: forwarded message attached

The second time I got it, it had an attachment, I scanned it and it's not a virus, just a text version of a heavily forwarded message, antoher one of the "forward this and microsoft will send you $xxxxx" boll0cks.

Looks harmless, and I've scanned it from every angle :) But the worrying thing is how they got the list of e-mails!

*SLAP* :D

Nah, phishing is when some african guy e-mails you telling you that he has £50m stuck in some dead guys account and needs you to help get it out. You give them some money for administration fees and they scam you into paying more and more.

Another twist i winning the lottery in some country that you've never even heard of :D

Our server was under a UDP DOS flood attack a week or so ago. Thankfully our server host has a high level of network/server security measures in place, therefore they detected the attack and took appropriate action. Whether this is connected I don't know, as the head gnome is currently on holiday, but I've asked someone to look into it...

Unlikely I'd of thought, a UDP DOS (DDOS;)) Does what it says on the tin, it clogs the server up with useless requests and makes access to the server impossible, with that in mind if the server is unavailable it's not gonna make it easy to jack it.

I thought phishing was where you send out emails conning people into giving up their passwords/cc numbers etc.

What you described is a 419 scam.
Oh yeah! Shoulda spotted that one ;)

These e-mails are just chain spam crap :)

Unfortunately, DDOS attacks can also cause Firewalls to crash allowing access to back end systems. It's rare that this happens as the server usually crashes well before that time.
