Let's do a quick review of the good:
Organization, was, as usual, very solid.
Venue was a good site with easy access.
Fields were generally good as was playing surface despite some unpleasant weather.
Layout for players was first rate. Inside the field layout, as has become something of a NPPL staple, makes getting to fields, getting air, etc. all fast and easy.
Consistency is improving so that players know what to expect field to field.
Reffing was good overall but there were still the odd problems--more coming.
Vendors--more than before but compared to World Cup it seemed like a ghost town.

Ok, you just knew I'd have something else to say. (Despite the bright smile and hug from Camille. Yeah, eat your heart out, boyz)

Boundaries--well defined but I still don't understand what the point is. Wet fields only exacerbated the obvious--games shouldn't hinge on somebody accidentally stepping on a piece of yellow tape. Let's do away with the whole out-of-bounds thing, please?
Spectator access--was rough depending on the field you wanted to see. Drakula, Chronic, Raven and Angel--forgetaboutit. A handful could watch if they were willing to make the hikes necessary. Except for the Angel field--no chance, no way, no how. JT had some bleachers but was a hike as did Evil and the main NPPL field which both had easy access and good views.
Plainly every effort was made to accomodate the players and offer decent security but at this venue it made it very difficult for ordinary spectators to watch lots of the games. Not a complaint, just an observation. Personally I'll always side with the player first but part of the NPPL's concept of how to display PB includes the spectator audience.
Reffing--on Sunday some of the refs were rigged with cameras and those refs seemed more interested in getting the shot than doing their job. Additionally the refs worked very hard but often interfered with the play of the game when they were out of position and decided to check certain players. Now, better to over do it than be lackadaisical and perhaps ongoing experience will settle things down. Refs are still missing their set-ups and critical play zones sometimes but overall the effort is first rate.

When is WDP gonna dump that field in the ocean where it can foul tuna nets and give the players a break?

What was the deal with the Club Bed dealio? Did the NPPL sponsor that Wednesday night party for an exclusive list of invitees?

Alright, that's my view. How 'bout you? Whud'cha think of the whole shindig?

Good event

The Good:

- Site layout was great. Easy access to the all fields, air, chrono from the staging area.
- Field layouts were good (in most cases).
- Great site for an event.
- As far as I could see, the security surrounding the players area was very good, despite a few markers being stolen. Everytime I came or went, my armband was checked. I think that they did as much as they possibly could to limit access, although there were definitely people in there that shouldn't have been.
- The competition was top-notch. On the whole, the level of play was higher than Millennium.
- The organization was excellent.

The bad:

- The marshalling. Over the course of 8 games, we had 7 incidents of clean players being pulled. I know that this happens occasionally, but it happened in almost every game. And although not necessarily indicative of overall bad marshalling, we lost one game simply because the marshalls weren't paying attention. They admitted to the mistake after the game, but it doesn't really help much at that point. I talked to a lot of players over the course of the event, and was given similar opinions.
- Not once were our ID cards checked.
- Only one field checked for the competition mode setting on the Timmy's. This apparently was a new rule for Miami. It wasn't checked until our 6th game.
- Not enough team staging areas, or instances of teams taking the whole area, and not wanting to give up half.
- Boundry lines. This has been debated, so I'm not going to get into it, but the far tape on the Dracula field was ridiculous. Tons of people were eliminated for stepping across, or on, that line, or oversliding across it, because it was less than three feet from the castle. And yes, I'm well aware that it is a correct call, and players should be carefull not to cross it, but that was friggin' ridiculous. It's not good for the game, and is a stupid way to lose players.
- The trade show was kinda small for such a big event.

Overall, it was a quality event. We didn't play very well, but still had a good time at our first NPPL event. I would say that it was on-par with Millennium as far as the organization, layout, site quality, and all of the basics.

Those two pretty much covered the main points, and I agree with them, except that for us, the refs did quite well. I watched some sloppy marshalling on Raven, and I thought the Rage guy should have been out on the Nexus-Rage game. I also don't think the ref should have allowed Robbo to walk out there- nothing good came of that.

One other thing- the players' party. It was good that it was held Sunday, instead of the night before the finals. However, $6 for second rate beer makes me irritated. Mixed drinks for $9 seemed high, too. Maybe that's just Miami. I don't mind getting overcharged once in a while, as long as it isn't for crap.

The weak industry presence made me worry about the NPPL's future. Maybe I am paranoid, but I got a chill looking at the sparse vendar lot and the few paint trucks. Looks like things have been good for Severe this year, though. I remember them working out of a moving van a year ago- now they are bringing their own beach.

PS Most of the fields were great. Tuna nets are too good for that Angel field. Every time I see that shade of blue, I shudder. Burn it shed it poke it full of holes!I didn't care for the Evil field so much this time around, either.

PPS Thanks to the Colorado Sharp Shooters for letting me guest on their Grey team. It was a good time, and we got to play Sunday (for a little bit)!

Details, the angels are in the details...

I liked the way they showed respect for the refs.

¤ nice, large chrono tents

¤ nice, large, separate ref tents

¤ breakfast for the refs (!)

¤ numbered (!) black & white striped ref jerseys

¤ fruit

¤ water coolers in the ref tents (like at the World Cup)

¤ separate obstacle cleaning and field maintenance crews

These details help the refs concentrate on the very important job at hand and show them that they are more than just grunts.

Other good points:

¤ nice, broad, bright yellow boundary lines. I do agree that they were much too close to the props on many fields, especially Drakula. I believe (after much debate) that boundary lines are necessary due to insurance and basic safety requirements to keep playing away from netting. But I think boundaries should be kept at least 2 meters away from any obstacle.

¤ players' tents as separate booths right in the middle of the playing fields. A small detail: put the air station right in the center rather than in one corner.

¤ dead boxes separate from flag stations. Some were see-through some not. I'd like to see black tarp covering dead boxes up to eye level and then see-through net so that players can see the rest of the game. I think there should be a place to put guns separate from the dead boxes.

¤ the PA system seemed to be loud enough and had speakers well-placed enough to be effective in calling teams to their fields. I don't recall any delays.

I have more praise and suggestions after I get unpacked...
