My next question then is ... what difference does a piece of metal in your shoe make?
Simply, the difference is the amount of damage a metal cleat as opposed to rubber, plastic etc, can make. Firstly, metal is much more likely to damage sup'air bunkers. Secondly it'll rip up the surface much more, especially as some fields these days are on astroturf (e.g. at Campaign) which will take permanant damage from metal cleats.

Cleats

Basically, if you have metal baseball 'spikes' which are not studs like football/rugby boots, they are flat metal plates, they can tear the bunkers and rip up the astroturf, hence, we made players change shoes at campaign.

hope this clrears things up

You will find that all metal studs, blades, cleats or spikes will be banned as the all have the same potential to cause damage either to the playing surface or the bunkers. Plus they are not very good on very hard surface, so your safety is at risk.
