applying to be a marshal at the local field and wonder whether any particular skills could be handy e.g. first aid/extreme good sense of humour/patience

first aid yes, personality yes, they are definites. Also learn to love being shot cos you will be, and lots. You'll need to learn things fast, and have a lot of stamina because working at most sites is a long day. And watch out for some indefinite hazing we rip our newbies to pieces when they come by. so much fun

firstly first aiders need to be trained this is normally coverd by the senior marshal for the game
a high pain threshold is always a plus because you always seem to be standing in that one customers line of fire when he doesnt meen to shoot you
i would say you need to be assertive because there is always those cusomers usually the same ones who caused those welts all over your back who insists on goggle lifting whenever he thinks you back is turned
but ye a good sence of humor is always usefull and always remember your talking to customers not your mates so be polite

On your little question about marshaling if your planning on working on a sight you will be getting training they will teach you the basics and all you need to know about marshaling. Each sight have there own way of running things it's just getting used to the way they run the place after a wile you get used to the flow of the place and your job will become much more easier . You have to be prepared to work hard just like another job you have to be a people person i know that sounds wired but you do, be confident and you'll be on your way to becoming a marshal.
