You want to get the train the Fuengirola. It's the end of the line i believe. Takes about 20mins. Make sure you watch you bags as there may be pickpockets around. Fuengirola station is a 5min walk to the front

A few of us fly out tomorrow from Gatwick. We arrive at around 10.40 i think so will be getting the 11:00 or 11:30 train from the airport to Fuengirola.

Had a look at a few of the train information sites and this is what i know...

The train station is 8 minutes walk from the departures hall at Malaga airport, its located at the far end of the parking area outside just over the bridge crossing the main road.

The ticket machines are located outside the Train station before you get to the platforms.

You will need to buy a ticket before you board the train, or face paying big fines!

The trains heading for Fuengirola will be travelling west on the C1 line, there are 13 stops before you get there and it will take around 30 minutes.

Not sure on the exact train fares but its definatly below 3 euros.

If you fancy getting a taxi expect to pay around 25 euros.
I have never been there before so this is just what i have managed to look up on some spanish websites.

If anyone knows better or anything i have mentioned is wrong let me know.

A quick note too:

Last year there were some problems with bogus taxis. I was told someone was actually beaten up in a taxi (can someone confirm?) so it might be advisable for people to avoid getting taxis alone. The majority of the drivers are fair, speak some english and are helpful but there's always the odd one that will fcuk up your Sunday :)

Trains at Malaga Airport
There is a train service from Malaga Airport which goes as far Malaga City one way and Fuengirola in the other direction. Eventually it will go all the way up to Puerto Banus and Estepona, but this is work in progress and it will not happen for a few years.

The train station is on the opposite side of the road from the airport terminal. To get there you need to be on the first floor level and turn right out of the departures hall.

You walk past the new terminal 1 extension where the car hire companies are located until you come to a sign sending you over zebra crossing into the car park area. Look to the left in the car park and follow the signs until you get to an elevated metal bridge which crosses the motorway below and eventually leads to the station.

This is about a 6 minute walk which is all on one level until you exit from the bridge down some steps or a slope, but when you get to the station platform you need to climb a dozen or so fairly steep concrete steps to get to it. So anyone with walking difficulties will have a problem. There is an assistance point there, but with all the building works going on it is not yet connected.

Once the work is finished the new look Malaga Airport will have the platform within the main terminal building and you will also be able to catch trains to places like Seville direct from the there.

If you go to Malaga Renfe at Maria Zambrano Station which is just 4 stops from Malaga Airport Station, then you could change and go all the way to Madrid or even Barcelona by train.

If you are heading for Marbella you need to catch a bus, book a transfer or take a taxi.

Catching a train at Malaga Airport
The station is not manned and you can purchase your train tickets from the self-service machines before you climb the steps to the platform.

There is only one platform in operation at the moment which does not have any train information so the clue is that if the train approaches from your right it is going into Malaga and from your left it is heading for Fuengirola.

As a double check look at the front of the train as it approaches as this indicates where it is headed.

You can hire a car from drivespain.com from Wednesday to the Monday for 90 Euros + a full tank of petrol. Not bad if split between 3 or 4 people. I fly to AGP a lot and that's who I use.....they come under the 'Europa car hire' umbrella at Malaga airport, and are the first car hire company you'll see at the bottom of the ramp in the car hire section of the airport (just below the baggage collection area).

Hope that helps somebody!
