M25 Marshaling

BAD TO THE BONE
The feedback that i have recieved as my first outing as an ultimate about the standard of marshaling at Dunstable has been very positive and i would hope that over the next legs it will improve again.

It's never going to be perfect, especialy when there is constant turn around of marshals available but we will try to maintain the standards and if anybody with some experience is up for it, let sparklie know so that we can rosta you in. I know everybody wants to play all of the time but no marshals= no tournament.

Overall i enjoyed my day with very few problems once we'd got going and any that i did have were sorted out with the minimum of fuss and to my and the interested parties satisfaction.

Having been a player i will run through the fields as you would and make my obsevations about the overall performance.I may omitt some names but that i due to my ignorance of all the names who marshaled.
Field 1 : Shockwave; a top performance from a top team, they set the pace and the other fields were playing catch up once they got going. Thanks guys
Field 2 : No problems here either. Field ultimate Trevor Giddings soon got on the ball with his marshals.
Field 3 : This is the one that i know most were not confident about and i recieved a couple of reports about them being too static and not reading play. They were the least experienced and certainly lacked an experienced field ultimate. One of them bravely volunteered (sorry i cant remember your name) and did a very good job under the circumstance's.

I observed them on the field and pointed out a few ways to improve their marshaling all of which were taken on board. I then circumnavigated the fence and observed them from the hill from where i had a very good view. Overall they were not doing a lot wrong, maybe a little slow at reacting and turning teams around seemed to drag a bit but that was lack of experience not abilility.

I told them about the complaints i had recieved but i also informed them that i could not see any major faults with what they were doing and this they seemed to appreciate and their confidence/ battered ego's and tired bodies were reinflated and they ended the day with their tails up.

On the day, most complaints seemed to come from interested parties from outside the playing arena and most reached me via sparklie/Liz. If you have 'playing' problem once the tournament starts, come and find the ultimate first. He will deal with the problem more quickly. Likewise if you need another table to put your kit on or more loo paper go and find spaklie or liz and leave the ultimate alone to drink his tea in peace;)

Lastly thanks to all the players and marshals for a very good event. 'We both need eachother'. and special thanks to kieran.Dead on his feet but not dead in the head i couldn't have got through the day with out ya.

Cheers Ralph

well done guys....

didn't have any problems on field 3 myself and only a couple of 'dodgy' calls on field 1 but no more than is to be expected in a hard game... the only instance that i can pick out is on field one in our last game against the scratch pro team stepping in for no limits... a mugger went for my tape mid guy i riddled him as soon as i saw him inside of the coke can...he paused momentarily then went round the right hand side for another go at my front guy...had to riddle him again before he gave up...(think i was the shot to the nuts that he showed me after the game that did it) i would have called that a 141 but which could have made a big difference to the game's outcome... still never mind just thought someone would have pulled him immediately given his 'oh **** i just got riddled' body language :) apart from that one instance no probs at all!

well done fella, this was the best tourney so far with regard the marshalling and schedule, considering the delay at the start you managed to get the event almost back on time and finished the whole lot at a reasonable time!! the schedule was much better in that we did not have too long or short time between games, this was also a relief.

i too must say a big thankyou to Shockwave for their excellent marshalling on field 1, although i never saw any probs on any of the fields, apart from being shot 15 times during a mugging and the player did not get pulled for it!!!! that bloody hurt!!!

the only small critisism i have is the chrono, i know we had a incident with a hot gun, so this is not meant to be a 'i'm not happy cos we got penalty points pop' but i do strongly feel that the inaccuracy of all the chronos on site were not helping you marshalls and definately us players. for instance i walked up to filed 3 and chronoed my gun at the first station it read 285, 290, 292 - fantastic!! then i got chroned before entering at field 3, 312, 320, 307 - eh?? how ca that be? i duley turned it down to 285ish, then on the field my range was ****e, so i chroned it on the second station again after the game and got 236, 228, 240 - eh?? just a suggestion and a question to boot, but dont we need calibrated instruments at tourneys? and if handhelds are to be used can we have them checked against the static radar chronos to see if there is any differences?

all in all tho a great day, and great training for us 2 weeks before Amsterdam!!

thanx to all for a great event:)

I agree.
As a suggestion to ALL tournament organisers can the chrono's all be calibrated before the day. I think it'd help everyone if all the chronos read the same!

Several people noted that the chronos were not very well calibrated relative to each other, which is funny because I thought somebody was going round in the morning with a calibrator before they were put into use

BAD TO THE BONE
Russell : it's good to be back....ish :D

Gaff : Considering the pre tournament comments you were making about wrong divisions etc, it comes as a great compliment that you had a really good day.

With regard to the on field chronies i have to admit that i'm not to up with latest technical developments. Come to think of it my gun tech was so bad that if it weren't broken i did not fix it. I sent it to bonnich for tlc:cool:

Things move on and like the drug cheats in athletics, chrono cheats are always 2 steps in front of detection. I'm not entirely happy with hand held chronys (that's probably my ignorance)what are the other options?.
If things had started ok on sun we could have done some sort of calibration between the static & handhelds but as you know even the statics vary from field to field. I will try to do some sort test before the next leg and possibly have the most consistent in situ.

My major concern is about saftey and that's where the handhelds come into their own. We all know that it is possible for the less honest to manipulate the tech in their markers during play and this needs to be discouraged. If the hand helds put the fear of Robbo (god) up them by being less accruate then so be it most would say. It does mean that some innocents may get trapped as well but as i say, what are the alternatives.

The other problem is that most teams run their markers with no room for error.I dont know what the percentages are but if you set it up at 290fps it only leaves you 10fps to play about with.Is that enough? only the player can decide.

Gun/Chrono/hopper tech has moved on a pace but have the paintballs? Lots R&D money go's in to make the best paintball but as far as i know you will never get a perfectly sphereical ball.Thats why the militaries stopped using musket balls as they could never predict which way they would fly everytime. All you need is 5-6 differently shaped paintballs to go over the chrony and there go's your 10 fps.

Still i will seek advise about handhelds/statics and see what improvements can be made.....if any.

Regards Ralph

Hi Gaff,

Most event organisers do not own 4-5 radar chronies we all borrow each others, I own 2, sadly 1 of mine is out of circulation and has missed the past 2 events. Thanks to Just Paintball and Draxus for lending us their chronies.

I did my best to calibrate all the chronies but with a very testie line of paintballers waiting to chronie I could only do my best. I was 100% happy with the radar chronies. The hand helds I would have liked to spend some more time on but with lots of moans I concured and left it at my best shot.

Thanks for your sugestion and it has given me an idear how to cut out at least some of the work that needs to be done sunday moring.

Good luck to all the teams going to the Dam happy balling sparklie
