Warped Sportz will not be attending the World Cup

Got a press release in from them this morning from Warped. They say that they're not coming to the Cup because the PSP (read Jerry Braun) has taken the fun out of paintball with its ban on alchohol and 'lewd behavior'.

They've taken quite a stand on this one, this is Ed Poorman's statement: "We had some big things, some really cool things planned for this year. Seriously. We were looking at crazy stuff, like midgets and cage- dancers. We were even in talks about having a huge FREE concert featuring Unwritten Law. However, with the new policies regarding the zero tolerance ban for alcohol, even for those of age, and the ‘lewd behavior clause’ it just became far too much effort and too sticky. What’s lewd behavior? My mom thinks its women no wearing bras or bands that swear on stage.”

Dan Napoli added this: “Over the past several years, I think we’ve developed a pretty good reputation, along with WDP, for giving players and event goers something extra. Everything from the Heaven’s to the rock concerts to IAO, to tattoo artists and fire breathers. Just show up and sell stuff? That doesn’t seem very cool. For us, it certainly doesn’t feel like we’re giving the paintball scene anything back, or anything extra. We’d like to thing we are about more than just taking people’s money.”

So what is this? Warped Sportz making a stand for the forces of good (or evil) in Paintball? Or another clever publicity stunt from Paintball's best PR machine?

Can we believe Dan when he says that Warped are interested in giving something back to Paintballers rather than just taking people's money?

And you can bet there have been some interesting conversations with Jerry following WDP's performance at Campaign - after all he's got Disney to think about.

Now we start to see the potential clash between current paintball culture, and restrictions likely to come into play when we get the big sponsors involved. Disney is a "family" company and as such needs to protect it's reputation, hence the booze & behavior clauses. We'll probably get the same type of conditions for tourneys sponsored by companies like Coca Cola as they too have a "family" reputation.
One the sport is more established big time then we could probably get away with "lewd behavior" etc (within limits of course), but until then we may well be looking at either toeing the line, or doing without the big sponsors.
Do the extreme sports have the same problem? Maybe TJ could tell us what they do.
Or can anyone think of companies that will offer the kind of support that the Disneys of the world can, but won't mind the somewhat racy behavior that seems part of the paintball culture?

Yeah, right

If I need a course of antibiotics after exposure to Warped's idea of pball culture I ain't having any.
Like Madonna in the 90's Warped just has to keep pushing the envelope 'cus that's their chosen image. Too bad it's already old hat and been done to death.

Sorry kids

Even my superhuman body gets whacked by illness once a year, and bingo if today ain't tha day.

However, the skinny Limey who reckoned the drugs don't work obviously didn't have access to Dr TJ's medical supplies, so I'm outta bed for five and here to help.

Liz - other extreme sports gatherings certainly have booze, live music etc., but I gotta agree with Cow - some of tha stuff WDP and Warped put on simply would not occur at other sports I compete in, partly cos it's pretty tired and 80s and partly cos there are a lot of smart people, male and female, who don't see a bunch of strippers as being entertainment.

Punk bands, cool, but midgets and strippers - purlezze gimme a break.

Would Jerry have felt tha need to put an official ban down if he hadn't got wind that some companies were gonna push tha limits? Or is he just being a killjoy?

IMHO, although I think the principle sux, there are alot of people in pball who need protecting from themselves...and no, Baca and Hotpoint, that is soooooooo not a cue for a threadjack.

peace (going back to bed now...)

What the hell has midgets and cage dancers got to do with paintball?

I wish people would stop trying to push so called'Paintball Culture' on the vast majority of player who can not stand the music and attitude not to mention the fashion and vocabulary.

Warped is a great company. I own one of their signature markers, love the customer service, avalanche is a great team, but there really is no need for booze and strippers at a paintball event. If paintball is ever to be recognized as a real, safe, fun sport it needs to appeal to a wide range of people, not just ravers who like to get slammed and watch midget strippers. I don't think the vast majority of players will be offended that they've gotta wait 'till the get home to drink, and if they are, all they're doing is giving the sport a bad rap in the first place so who needs 'em? We have to secure those "family" sponsorships in order to get the sport recognized, and accepted and if that comes at the cost of avalanche not playing anymore, I say good ridance.

The thing I dont get is, why decide to not setup a stand period? Surely Warped make quite allot of money at the world cup and get lots of new customers. Their gonna throw that away just because they cant promote their 'all out' image?

The only people this new rule affects...

Are those who can't bring their own hot women, and those who have a thing for midgets.

The rest of us are not affected by Warped not being there to supply them. ;)

I'd turn my signature off if it would let me as this is just a flippant personal remark.
