Well - I've just got my 8-y-old son an ION and he loves it. He can easily out shoot me on my 04 speed (ION in rebound mode ;)).

It's light - isn't made of plastic (although it looks a bit like it is) - has plenty of upgrades/mods out for it already - has a few 'ION owners' forums on the t'interweb - it can be a bit air hungry though (in my experience).

As for the Trilogy - no idea sorry.

Hope that helps a little.

Biggest down side on the trilogy cocker was the fact that it couldn't easily be e-bladed (or race frames) But you can get an adaptor now so problem solved :)

Ion = Lots of bps for your money

Cocker = Lots of shiny bits and custom options for the future (although the options list for the Ion is growing fast)

I shoot a custom cocker (shot them since the year dot ('92, god i am old) so I am biased) But I will get an Ion as my backup when funds allow.

:D

They're two such very different guns that I think the most important thing is to think very carefully about what you want them for?

Is it for Rec'Ball or similar where what you need is something robust, simple to maintain and reliable - in which case go for the Ion.

Or is it for tourney level stuff where you need something light, very fast and with eyes? In which case, get the Ion.

*thoughtful face #7* Wait a minute...

Seriously dude, this isn't a controversial one, thgouh what I'm about to say is... Even the most diehard cocker fans are slowly moving away from them - not necessarily towards to Ion, mind - but away from them. They are at the tail end of their useful life, being heavy and unnecessarily complicated.

In order to get a cocker to the same spec as the Ion, you'd need to lash a huge lump of cash at it.

It is un-imaginable to see a team of the calibre of London Tiger Am's competing (and winning) with Trilogies, but that's exactly what they're doing with Ions.

I can't see any reason or advantage that you'd want the Trilogy for Recball instead of the Ion - to me it's a no brainer.

Now, cue someone weighing in with some sort of MQ valve comment ;)

garf how many times have your team came to me and said my gat is down can i use your cocker. and how many times has yours or nicks ion been down this year? hell of alot more then my cocker m8.

I dont have a trilogy but i was the 1st person to eblade it in the UK and the trilogy is a nice gat, plus you can add any bits to it as you can would a top end cocker.

But what you do get with a ion is something which you can take out of the box and play in any tourney, it comes down to two things do you want a gat which you can make in to something which has been setup how you like it and make it in to the best gat that you can, then go for the cocker. If you want something which is as fast as it is going to go and thats it then get the ion.

hey dude, how are you mate? Knew you'd reply if I rattled your cage like that :) Might have a video streaming question I need to ask youat some point!

In fairness to your point - and in retrospect - getting used to a teamful of new guns has been... interesting!

In retrospect, and with the benefit of 2020/hindsight, it's still true to say that every single problem we've experienced with the Ion has been due to a low battery, or in two other cases, a brand-new one supplied with main reg dialled all the way in and, in Nick's case, a problem with an Angel AIR reg. The Ions have been remarkably reliable, and I have to say, I don't think have been down more than your cocker, Jamie's trilogy or indeed Arthur's Ego.

In direct answer to your question, how many times haave we asked to borrow your cocker - I believe Nick did once at NSPL Leg 1. How many times has his been down? Twice - once then due to a problem with his Freak set, and once at Leg 3 due to a malfunction with his Angel AIR reg. How many tiomes has mine been down? None. How many times has everyone else's been down? None.

You make the point that the Ion isn't particularly upgradable and I would suggest it's developing into a gun with more aftermarket parts and options than almost any other gun, other than the cocker.

At the end of the day, I know your cocker rocks, and I know you're very happy with it - props to you. I'm glad you've found a gun that works for you, and I know you're proud of it.

Just to clarify the ION upgrades options....

There ARE a lot of upgrades and mods available now. Just like there is with any marker. Now, I must admit, I've never been a cocker fan (all that gubbins on the front scares me) hence I shoot Angels.

The ION is a brilliant gun straight out of the box - just ask my son. OK - so the trigger is a little 'slack' - but not many people stick with 'stock' these days anyway. Same goes for the barrel - impulse threads - so there are already a shed load of choices there.

It is purely down to personal choice - why not have a go at a few next tourney/walk-on - then decide. That's what I did (and the Angels milling looks nicer :p).

www.ionowners.com should help you with any ION problems (that's where I go when my son 'breaks' his).

EDIT : btw - as you are only down the road from me - you are welcome to have a 'play' with my son's ION. PM me if you are interested.

As everyone else has said... Ion out of the box rocks!

But hey I love sticking new bits on my cocker :) mmmmm mq........

I think the things you change straight away on an Ion are Trigger/feedneck and barrel, Bit cheaper than buying a mech cocker and splashing wonga on an E- Frame/nexus kit!!

And whover said cockers have reached the end of their usefull life!!! Wash your mouth out....well as its a text forum, bleach your fingers, my baby is sulking in the corner now ;)

That's not quite what I said :p - I was picking up on a thread posted by Tom Allen not so long ago, questioning whether they were 'towards the tail end of their useful life'

Cockers are, it seems to me, one of those gats that inspire fanaticism. Their owners worship them, and non-owners (like me) just don't get it... :)

'towards the tail end of their useful life'
I dont know about that when you look at the Karnivor which shot 54 bps,

I just had alook at how much i have spent on by cocker to get it to the way i like it, and i could have got 4 ion's and had a bloody good night , plus the money im going to spend when i get the mq valve which would make it 5 ion's. But i got a gat which im more then happy, i will over the next few months get an ion for a backup gat if my cocker does go down
