I have had an impuse for the last 4 years its a great marker and it has the following upgrades brass hammer,cp on/off,cp vert reg, eclipse valve, smartparts lpr, backheart board, eclipse derlin bolt and the eclipse mag trigger.
At the end of the day the design is over 4 years old it to heavy and unless the upgrades your talking about include a new board it only shoots in semi (it may not even have a vison eye).

The ion is light has vison and will ramp at 17bps out of the box. Personally I would go for an Ion and upgrade that when you get the money or just buy an upped ion for the same price as a new one on the classified adds in this forum.

Impulse is way better, I've yet to find a simpler marker to maintain. Its reliable and shoots just fine. Off the stock Impy I recommend you change the trigger, the feedneck and the board if you want to ramp. Never had any problems with the vision eye either, shot dark shelled paint through it fine.

It is heavier compared to some markers *cough shocker cough* but its not really a big problem from my experience.

I started with an impy... and to be honest it was the best initial purchase i ever made. Ok yeah they may be old and out dated ie unless you change the board it doesn't ramp, but they are so reliable and have been around for yonks, so spares are easy to get hold of!
also with stock ion's they are good markers but require upgrading further to make them more reliable.

You can get some spectacularly tricked out impulses for bargains these days. The first maker I owned outright was an Impulse (as oposed to the numerous borrowed previously) and it really could shoot ropes. They are pretty damn simple to maintain, just try to avoid faffing around with it if it's running sweet.
