if your worrying aabout scratching it you can place a cloth between the spanner and gauge, you might need more tension because of the cloth but if its broke then it doesnt matter

No...doing what I said to do is best, as that is teh best way to do it...assuming of course, that you are using one of the small gauges...in a hexagon type shape.
A socket cant get any bigger, or slip off, or anything.
