Hey guys and gals!

Im kyle im from edinburgh!!! im 27 and been toying with the ideal of gettin into paintball for a while.I used to play airsoft which was very slow and have to say a bit boring.

Ive played paintball a fair few times and really keen to get involved and meet new people.

I havent bought much yet, I joined urban paintball as a member and got a free helmet other than that I have nothing else. Im looking to not spend as much money as I did on airsoft (£2k) I have tried the gog envy which I thought was really good but wondered everyone elses opinion on the marker?

anyone else from around my area on here? also is there any shops that I can go to to try these guns and find whats best for me?

Kyle

Hi Kyle

There's a decent body of players across the central belt. There's a few sites other than Urban too. Closer to you are A1 Paintball which is near Ratho and Rebellion in Falkirk. A little further afield you've got SPC just south of Glasgow.

We're struggling for actual shops though, unfortunately. All of the actual real walk-in ones are south of the Border. BZ and Just Paintball (both of whom you can find in the banner at the top of the page) are probably the closest. Your best bet might be to find a local walk-on and see if you can get chatting to some of the regulars and see what they think about markers. They might even give you a go! There are a couple of teams who train at Urban on alternating Tuesday evenings. They could point you in the right direction and are probably the most local.

Welcome to the game!

Hi Hoot,

Ive been to a1 before. Decent there. Like the fact that the indoor is pretty quick and easy to swing passed though. I really want to get involved but im a bit shy at times! although im not the shy type. where are you from yourself? whats your opinion on the gog envy for a starter marker?

I know the feeling. I was shy too, but hanging around bolshy paintballers is one way to get over it! I'm from Falkirk, 31 and have been playing for a couple of years.

The Envy looks like a reasonable starter marker, but it's missing a few features that are desirable in a modern gun:

1) A programmable board - the UK model will only fire semi-automatic. Truth be told, any other firing mode is technically illegal (the UK rules are one trigger pull, one round discharged), but there's a bit of a grey area around certain modes like ramping (where a set number of trigger pulls per second will allow the marker to fire at whatever rate of fire you have it set to, e.g. you pull the trigger 4 times a second and it fires at 12 balls per second).

2) Break beam eyes - a light sensor in the breach of the marker which can tell when there's a ball in the chamber ready to fire. With higher rates of fire you might find that a ball hasn't dropped all the way down and you'll cut it in half causing a bit of a mess and every other ball behind it to swerve and bend instead of going straight!

3) Spare parts kit, inevitably things go wrong or wear down and need replacing. It looks like the spare parts are a separate purchase. You'll might get a few bits and pieces though. It could just be the wording on the advertising blurb.

Please don't think that any of this makes it a poor choice. At the end of the day anything that can shoot straight is a good option. I've been playing with pump action paintball markers a lot this year, (bit like a pump action shotgun, you have to pump each shot and then fire), and despite being a bit outgunned at times it's a lot of fun. You don't always need to fire a lot of paint at a target.

Personally I'd get your post count up a bit by contributing in the various forums and then hitting the classified sections when you hit 20 posts. You could purchase a decent second hand marker for the same price as a new Envy. Hit up Youtube for review videos and in-game footage. The Invert Mini, for example, is reliable, has all of the above things I've mentioned and will last you a lot longer than the Envy will.
