I've been hunting around for someone to provide insurance on my paintball gear. Travelling around these tourneys you end up carrying a good few thousand pounds of gear, and so far I can't get cover from my house insurance for more than £1000 personal possessions. The car insurance won't cover it, neither will any brokers I've spoken with. (They'll cover businesses but not personal stuff).

Have any of you been able to take out a separate specialist insurance policy to cover your gear whilst travelling the country or world?

If so who do I phone and how much should I expect to pay.

Cheers

I don't know if they only do students, but my cocker is insured for £1000 (anyone want to steel a cocker... I could get a REALLY nice one for that :D )

But any company that won't insure over £1000! What about computers, Stereos CDs? I am very suprised at that

How about getting one of those " We do the shopping around so you don't have to" Firms to find out for you (or use Google or sumit to find websites)

The £1000 personal possessions, was for items stolen away from the house. So for example you've got your cocker insured on the contents insurance but if you had it stolen from your car or at the site I don't think they'd be interested.

That's why most companies are happy to insure high value items upto £5k in a house because typically a house is considerably safer that a car or a tourney site.

Now I know most of the paintball rabble are good folk but as the game gets bigger and bigger with TV coverage on the horizon, more and more people are going to learn how much the stuff costs and you'll get the odd person interested in make a buck at our expense. So I thought it would be better to be safe than sorry.

Hiya! I used to work in insurance. It might be worth checking that your household policy actually covers your gear for up to £1000. It all in the wording..Theft cover is usually only provided from 'a locked motor vehicle where the item was not left in clear view' ie in the boot. Unless someone physically breaks into the boot (trunk0 of your car & nicks your marker then you're not covered! Some policies even add 'unattended motor vehicle' to the conditions so you have to be in the car when your marker is nicked Duh! like that's going to happen. I don't know of any policies that cover for goods (guns) in the open which are left unattended (like while you go to answer the call of nature) and 2 mins later aren't where you left them. Tough luck they say... you shouldn't have left it. Likewise while you're playing & someone nicks your gear back at base...you left it unattended so tough! If you accidentally lose your marker...like it falls out of your pocket and you didn't notice till later (Duh?) it may be covered by all risks cover as it wasn't unattended at time of loss. Basically READ the small print! Happy hunting

It's done through Direct Line, costs me approx £30 a year to do... Well worth the money..

I've made 1 claim on it so far, when a BOC bottle was dropped on my cocker and broke off the feed tube.. got £350 from Direct Line for a new cocker.

Are you covered?

My gear is covered on the house insurance as named items, that includes cover for anywhere outside of the house.. even in the middle of a field.
CHECK the small print.... NOT if it's intentionally left unattended. It has to be stolen following 'forcible & violent entry....to a building or vehicle guys!!) or dropped unintentionally, like a bracelet falling off your wrist. Do CHECK or you may find you're a bit pissed when the insurance co refuse to pay out!! Accidental damage is something else though and yeah the insurance co should pay out for that. I'm just on about someone nicking your gear when you're looking the other way!
