Gatwick is the nearest by car. M23 - A23 into London via Croydon. turn Right on Streatham High Street. Follow the signs.

If you getting on a train then its really not a problem as Crystal Palace has its own station.

If you are in a hire car I will warn you that London operates a congestion charge scheme for centeral London not sure how it works but I know that you get to pay a fee if you enter the centre of the big smoke, so stay well clear.
Does that apply to hire cars anyhow?
Better still ditch the car idea and go with the tube, that way all your kit could smell of piss. Just don't stand still for to long as your likely to get tagged by some spotty 13 year old with a spray can, oh and then theres the threat of getting mugged, stabbed, raped etc.
Oh hell hire a car and pay the congestion charge its safer in the long run. Not that its rough in London.:p

As long as you're coming from Gatwick or Heathrow, the congestion charge shouldn't affect you as it only covers the City & surrounding areas which is towards the east, whereas Crystal Palace is south west. In fact, even if you come into Stanstead the easiest route is to go round rather than through town so London City is the only airport where the congestion charge might have an effect.

Gatwick is definitely the best option for the reasons Niall gives. I think you'll find that loads of ballers end up staying in Croydon anyway, as that's just about the nearest area with plenty of decent affordable hotels & a good comparatively quick route to the venue.

London City Airport is not in the congestion charging zone - the charging zone is roughly where Zone 1 on the tube map begins, which is a small area in the centre of London that really does need it (apart from the days that I need to drive, in which case it should be free :D)

The nearest charging zone boundary to London City Airport is at Aldgate, and if you're going via there to get to Crystal Palace, you're lost. ;)

And yes, hire cars count. :(

For reference, if anybody IS coming from London City Airport, take the A13 towards London, then go through the Blackwall Tunnel heading south, join the South Circular about 2 or 3 junctions down the A2 and follow it clockwise until u get to Crystal Palace. :D

There are LOTS of signs that tell you how far to the congestion charging boundary, so you have plenty of time to turn off/turn around if you get lost.

London Gatwick (LGW) is the most convenient airport for Cystal Palace. Here are the airport options, in order of preference:

Fly to Gatwick Airport (LGW), then get trin to East Croydon and change for a train to Crystal Palace (walking distance from the venue) in about 35 mins.

From Heathrow Airport (LHR) there is a bus link to Feltham station, from where it is about 60 mins to Crystal Palace (changing at Clapham Junction.) The other choice is to take the Underground into Central London, then find your way to London Bridge (for instance changing at Green Park tube station.) Crystal Palace is 20 mins from London Bridge station.

If you really don't have a choice of airport, Luton Airport (LTN) is about 90 mins away by train (change at London Bridge) but since it's completely the wrong side of London it's best avoided.

"London Stansted" (STN) is about as accurate as saying "Rekjavik Stansted". Avoid.

City Airport (LCY) has tube links, so again find your way by tube to London Bridge.
