How much tournament paintball do you really want.

Ok I suppose your immediate initial reply would be "every day please" but lets stay in the real world for a while and try and work out what the market should be providing to its customers.
I am not suggesting imposing a tournament limit in the UK at all that would be ridiculous but how many events per series do you think is fair to the players/teams.

For instance this years PA only consisted of three events (it would normally be six) but only because I needed the opportunity for the teams and myself to try the new format and then be allowed to re-jig some aspects if required before the new season, that was done primary for my benefit but it did also allow teams to try Xball.
I believe teams are asked/cajoled into playing extra events that may be detrimental to the longevity of the team.

Of course as some will rightly point out nobody gets there arms twisted to attend - well not in the physical sense, but have you ever played an event because of pressure from your team mates.

I think no team should be asked to commit or be expected to play more than half a dozen series events per season, if the teams wants to play every week they can do that if they wish but if a player can not afford to play or needs to spend some family time they can also do that without spoiling the league for the team.

I have seen over the last few years players who have come on the scene got the kit they need and before you know it they are retiring and selling up because they have to move on because they can not afford it, during that time they may have played twenty or so tournaments and then realised their overdraft is not there to finance a hobby.
They have not left paintball because they don't like it, only because they can no longer justify the expenditure required to continue with what they feel they have to commit to.

Would it not be better for paintball to reduce the number of events they feel tied too and extend their paintball life considerably, good for them, great for paintball.

Another plus point is teams would also be able to acquire time and money that they could use for constructive training.

Thoughts ?

I think the finance part is always the hardest. Once a month is the sensible idea for a national tournament. If it was to cut down to say once every 6 weeks, like the milleniums, then i think it would be hard for teams to stick together because i personally think alot of people wouldn't be able to hack the commitment needed to train with a team every weekend for 5 weeks

I would rather fewer, higher quality events as opposed to lots of on or sub-par events. Make the entry fee slightly higher, but have more of a spectacle. The time between events would also be a good chance to accrue money needed for entry and teams would focus more around training.

I'm with Paul on this one, particularly the bit about having plenty of extra time for training, there's a lot of teams out there who never really train as such, simply play tournaments, and that may be partly because of the abundance of tournaments. I personally would rather play fewer tournaments and spend more days drilling and scrimming as a team.

I played pretty much every weekend in my hay day. Even tho I was sponsored to high heaven, it still cost, food, beer etc... but the thing that killed it for me was that I just wanted a break now and then, ya know? To not have to travel the length of the country every weekend, and to lie in bed watching the Hollyoaks omnibus.

But anyway, I think 6 events, plus a Cup event per series, per season is good. Just pick and choose what to play, play one series and stick to it.

Doing a lot of events, (very) many more than your competitors, could be seen as attempting to monopolize the scene, right? Cough cough. :).

I think the points have already been made pretty well (quality not quantity).
I've already heard the reasoning behind this from Russell and it makes a lot of sense.
