It's been done to me, I've done it to others, and seen it happen
Not necessarily in game, it can be a chat with tips, helping someone fix something or fixing it for them
(The second is nice, the first is better - or having them watch what you do/participate so they take away the knowledge)

Do it a lot - always enjoy playing punter days and helping out newbies. Always happy to tech people's markers or give advice on tounry days - enough guys did it for me when Istarted, so keep it going. I've even gone as far as to lend out my spare markers when playing rental days to youngsters if they seem trustworthy...
