Standard Rules - How hard can it be?

There has been a fair bit of discussion on this board recently (and others around the World) on the rules we use to govern the playing of our sport. Infractions (real or imagined) at recent events (LA and Max Masters for example) have prompted these discussions.

So I have to pose a question:

How hard would it be to form a conglomeration of the NPPL (oops, sorry, PSP ;) ) and Millennium Rules into one standard rulebook that both tournament series use.

> The formats in the rules should be 3, 5, 7 & 10 man (to cover 95% of the games played)
> Cover an international standard for player suspension. (room trashing, physical altercation, etc)
> International standard on chronographing (be it pre-game, during game, post game)
> The list goes on....

The timing for this seems pretty good to me. With the PRO being started in the States, and the new disciplinary committee in Europe ... what is actually stopping us?

If something like this was to be implemented then we would be most of the way there to a World Standard set of rules for tournament ball as we know it. I can guarantee that New Zealand would adopt those rules, and I'm pretty sure that we could get them into Australia as well ....

So - comments/thoughts/agreement? Since Jerry (Braun) now regularly peruses of these boards, and with most of the Millennium Board on here at one time or another, I'd be keen to hear your comments on this ... be it for or against.

Cheers
Marty

Hey Dannefaered I don't think it would be all that hard. BUT there has to be a person or persons who would be willing to take the time to sit down and standardize these rules. Good example if this would work would be the Military. We should have everything standardized since we are all the same right? Well since 1947 the AF has been a seperate force but there are different bases doing things by their rules and confusing the crap out of everyone. This where the same thing would happen in those rules. A field may interpret the rules one way and another field the other way. Who would be right well it all depends on who interprets what how. The true rule would only be followed if these people wrote them them selves! So the anwser to the original question was... I would say YES and NO!:D Sucks don't it?

There still are a few minor differences ... but I don't have copies at work with me.

What I suppose that I am also talking about is the combining of formats into the rules (i.e. 3, 5, 7 and 10 man). Let's have one set of rules ... issued by one group.

It may mean that the rules committee should be people from both systems ... but that shouldn't be a problem with the internet being available.

What we can't afford is having two different sets of committees moving in slightly different direction on the rules, etc.
