how does it all work exactly?

how do pro 'ballers make it pay?
Plenty don't. Many if not most players on 'Pro' teams receive all or most of the paintball basics including their gear, paint, travel and so on but that's it. And that's America.

*where does the monney come from to pay them?
For most teams it comes from sponsors and team ownership. To date only a few teams have much in the way of outside sponsorship or income.

*do sponsours give them monney aswell as free goodies?
Sponsors give teams money--players on rare occasions--but for most not as much as they used to relatively speaking.

*is it just prize monney?
Nope. In fact depending on the team the deal can be the winnings go the ownership because they are fronting all the expenses.

*is it other work such as promotional work, appearing in magazines ect where they make the bulk of there profit?
Bulk and profit aren't two words that generally apply to most Pro players.

The reality for most is that it's still tough because the level of commitment and time is enormous for players who aren't really making a living doing this.
Stay in school. (And start paying attention.)

There are so many misconceptions that surround pros with the reality being a lot less glamorous.
The truth of the matter is, a handful of guys earn a living from playing this game with guys like Chris Lasoya and Ollie Lang being given contracts (and industry jobs) as a direct result of their playing ability and status.

The vast majority of other pros basically get free Paintball with no real payment other than expenses being met.
And the money for that comes from sponsor deals the team owner has managed to secure.

OK I have bin arguing with my brother the meaning of pro and paintball! He states they cant technically be called pro,s unless being payed, as pro is really short for proffession. But Im arguing that its the level of play they are at. Somebody give me some ammo against him?

They can't technically be called pro's unless they're being paid...however, it's the highest level of paintball there is, so it's called Pro.
So really, he's right.

When the word 'pro' is used in Paintball it is not being used in its definitive form. In the strictest sense, of course it isn't being used to distinguish money earners in our sport, it is used to identify the best players as has been suggested elsewhere.
This misnomer has been in use since the very beginning of tournament Paintball when teams started to be differentiated.
There are pros who do get paid and as I said before, the vast majority get their expenses met and so this could in fact be seen as being paid by default since everybody else has to dip into their pockets to support themselves playing.

A "Pro" athlete makes a living by playing a sport. Technically, I don't think there are *ANY* Pro paintball players. Ollie and Lasoya are the closest, but they are not paid just to play; they also have regular emlpoyment duties with their sponsors/employers, so even they arn't pro in the strictest sense.

You do *NOT* need to be paid to play to be a Pro athlete - many pro athletes are Pro based on PRIZE MONEY, or better yet, ENDORSEMENT DEALS. This is especially true at the top of major sports; top athletes get a lot more money in endorsement deals than they do from their playing salary.

In PAINTBALL, 'Pro' really means 'Expenses paid'. But, that's true at the D1/D2 level for some teams.
