Rec ball is usually a scenario game or for leisure/fun (but some people get v. serious.
Tourny ball is exactly the same off the field but on the field you are dead meat and there isn't as much camo around.
It's a lot to do with the player's attitude on the field and the types of games you play.

Rec-ball - Recreational Ball - Weekend Warrios (not so anymore) etc. People who play paintball as a way to relax and have some fun every month or so. Usually played in woods or at an indoor field
Tournament Ball - People playing in teams, who train just like football teams etc. Play paintball competivly (still for fun though) but at a "higher level". Usually played at a certain venue in Sup'Air or hyperball formats.
