Getting a Custom98 for Christmas. What basic maintenance procedures should I do?

I play about 3-4 times a month. It sounds kind of tricky to take the gun apart. How often do you have to do that?

Do you have to oil stuff? What oil would be suggested.

Pretty soon I will invest in AA14" barrel, and double trigger kit.

I have a rather limited budget. Have moved up from Blade (Worked for a half hour), to Samarai (worked for 30 seconds), to Tippmann. Mostly do woods with friends.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated:cool:

Hope this helps.

Well, if you want to keep all of the internals in really great shape, they recommened that you open up the gun and apply some grease and oil to the parts that would rust after every game you play. That would take a lot of time though. When you purchase the gun, a little tube of gun oil is included. Unless you buy it from a friend and he has used the oil already. My understanding is that the back and forward bolts are the only parts that rust. I oil up mine about every 2-3 weeks. Before you take all of the bolts off of the gun and open it up, I would recommeded that you have somebody show you what some of the smaller internal parts are first. Ask a person who works at your local field. When I fist opened mine up, about three or four really small parts flew out. I was lucky I found them all. You should be really happy with the Tippmann. I hope this helps. ;)

Get a rear cocking pin cause it looks rad! :)

Also if you get a drop forward on it some of them are set at a really wierd angle which forces up the liquid in the co2 bottle, so just watch out for that m8. An expansion cahmber from tippmann does the job and keeps it looking nice as well cause it's all... nice and that :)

Rear cockers do nothing constructive really. You already hit the mark with barrel and gun coming first. The oil I use for my guns is Gold Cup, but there are several choices including WDP's oil which I can't think of the name right off the bat but it must be good, and ACI airlube. How I would suggest you oil routinely is to simply unscrew the co2 bottle, put 2 or 3 drops of oil in the hole where the co2 goes through, and screw the bottle back on. After that, put some oil on the action (where you cock it and can see the main spring), cock it, and fire it about 10 to 15 times. Doing that after simply wiping off the outside of the gun and inside of the barrel to remove any obvious dirt is quite enough for routine maintenence. Tippmanns are legendary for their durability and reliability, which is why they're the most commonly used guns for rental by an astoundingly wide margin. For any more detailed instructions read the manual.

I strip my 98 after every game, and do a quick clean. The first time you take it apart (like mentioned b4) you should take care not to lose any parts, but after you see where everything goes it's real quick and easy.

An expansion chamber should be your first upgrade, if not that then go for a starfire bolt. As for barrels, I got a Dye Ultralite for X-Mas, and have yet to break a ball in it (after 3 cases).

also if there is any thing in the woods (very small pebbles, sand etc.) dont know y there would be but consider the rocket cock system r the rear cocking system so nothing gets inside the gun (very annoying to diassemble to get out dirt)
