I'm toying with the idea of getting a Freak barrel but can't afford a range of inserts, instead having to settle for one. I use mostly Diablo balls (Blaze and Inferno) and sometimes RPS and need advice on which barrel insert would be best to start off with.

I've only used the .691 insert once, usually use the .689 or .687 (though Blaze has been a bit smaller lately). The .689 is the one I would recommend you go for.

That's all well and good, but really if you can only afford one insert, then tell us what marker it's going to go on. Bascially a standard Freak barrel for a closed bolt marker like a cocker or shocker would be best suited with a .689 insert to start with, whereas an open bolt marker like an impulse would be best suited with a .693 as standard. Hope that helps a bit

Nick.

Nicky, could you explain this a bit further please? I'm not sure why which type of marker would affect which bore size you should use

Most closed bolt markers come with a .689 barrel as standard (eg the shocker) whereas most open bolt markers come with a bigger bore-sized barrel like a .693 (eg the impulse). Basically a closed bolt marker pushes the ball into the barrel before it is fired allowing for a tighter boresize to be used without causing any extra bursts. An open bolt marker pushes the ball into the barrel as it is being fired and as a result requires a slighly larger boresize to minimise ball breakage.
