Fitting a new guage to a reg/bottle

hi guys,

Just thought Id post this up before I have a go at doing it,

during the weekend just gone my bottle reg gauge started leaking so I've ordered a new one 'cheers fly' .

Now I've already cleaned the thread carefully removing all traces of old loctite, When the new gauge arrives apart from putting a bit of loctite at the start of the thread and some a litle higher up the thread as the 'Loctite thread' suggests, how much should i screw the gauge in ? I was thinking of screwing it it in as muc as the old one ifthe the threads are about the same length?

Also when its cured and set should I just test it with say 2000psi? fire till empty & then add more air repeat a few times as its a 5000psi bottle & reg ?

cheers guys in advance.

make sure you dont get any loctite on the end face of the guage, there will be hole there, if you get any near that it wont work!
put some on the threads without drowning it.
A nice trick someone showed me is to put a blob onto the thread and then literally do nothing, let the loctite naturally flow around the thread on its own, its very sticky so it shouldnt drip off but its liquid so it will run.

then depending on what make of guage it is you may have to grip the sides of the guage itself to turn it, make sure your spanner or adjustable is perfectly fitting or you risk marking it, usually they are chromed and any marks stand out a mile away.
you will find that the threads are probably tapered which means it will go in easy at first then tighten up, as it starts to tighten you need to line it up to the position you want it to stop in, ie with the guage the right way up! dont be tempted to try and force it round an extra turn once it is getting tight, you wont win!
once you have it where you want it leave it alone for the loctite to set, then air it up and away you go.
you may still be able to see a couple of turns of thread behind the guage, this is normal as the thread is tapered, they are designed to seal as they go in, not to go in all the way.remember to use a paper towel or a rag to clean any excess loctite off any visible threads round the back of the guage or it will look ugly and pick up any fluff or junk from your kit bag!

as for testing it, it will eather work or it will leak, no point messing about adding air bit by bit. they eather work or they dont, ive never heard of a guage failing and doing anything nasty.
if it starts to leak as you fill it, stop straight away and dump the air, remove the guage and start again probably adding more loctite as you didnt have enough on or leaving it longer to set!
