What would people choose? DM8's are a fair bit cheaper than Ego 08's but I don't know what the fundamental differences between the guns are..?

Major difference mate one is a spool valve and one is a poppit (id advise reading up on them mate as they are totally different) but this will all go down to personal opinion. They are both fast as you like as accurate as you get and about the same weight. One is quiet one is loud, one has a screen one has LEDs.
Go to your local site and see if anyone has one for a try would be my suggestion

As everyone above has said try them both. Planet has the best support in the business! Little to no maintenance on the EGOs where as there is a bit more on the DMs. EGO is louder and the DM is more maintenance heavy. Try em both and get the one you like best. Only you know what you like.

Best thing for you mate as you really seem so unsure of what you want , is to pop down to a local walk on site , training site etc and ask a couple of people that have the EGO & DM if they mind you popping a few off..
Seems to me also that that you are some what lacking in knowledge of any marker, so just out of simplicity i would probably sway towards an EGO as the oled board will be easier for you to set up and also maintenance is alot easier..
Depending on where you live i will be @ freekz on the 4th you are more than welcome to come a test out one of my EGO's

unfortunately I don't know of many places doing walkons round here and I don't think many here have ego's / dm's (there's a lot of scenario round here). So not much of a chance to try them, but I'll probably go for the ego since i think the features sound better. Plus a loud marker is appealing

egos are loud :O
ive only used an eos and a5 before like but its so quiet even without the barrel

Glenn once you try a spooler like a DM or Shocker you'll notice the audio difference between them.
