Thought i'd knock up a pic tutorial on how to and how NOT to dye stuff
I had a broken halo too hopper, so snapped up two cheap hybrid shells for £10, bargain! one grey and one in "snow camo".... well, that was the plan, but two grey turned up.... ah well.
what you need
something to dye
an old big pan
dye
paper towels for cleaning up
newspaper everywhere, don't want to stain the work surface!
I use RIT dye, cheap, there are hundreds of retailers online and on ebay, about £2.50 a pack.
ready for the pan
bout 2 litres of boiling water, and a packet of dye...
now this is where attempt one failed..... I put in each bit, one by one..... and half hour later, nice and black WARPED plastic!
FAIL! So shell two.... (glad they messed up my order now!) into the pan, fully assembled!
20-30mins of rotating to get an even finish, now if your pan is deeper, stir constantly so the plastic doesn't melt in contact with the pan! Now I wasn't expecting a jet black finish, as I dare not leave it in long enough for the dye to take that well, settling for a dark bronze effect, that I actually preferred!! Also did a lid too, came out nice!
put it all back together and the lid wouldn't shut!!! ARRRRGH! simple fix, hair dryer and a clamp, heat up the neck, gentle squeeze and hold till cool, perfect once more!
And job is a good one!
Hope this was of use to anyone? I've dyed everything from M249 hand guards to car light clusters in the past, its cheap, easy to do and makes for a unique finish.
Disclaimer, i'm in no way responsible for damage to your gear, mum's/partners kitchen or for any other uber fail you can achieve in the process of "aving a go!"
