While the list of sites which no longer cater for tournaments in the South East is a long one (Westpoint, APG, Eurosplat, Sidcup, Temple and Mayhem Abridge having all vanished from a once packed calendar), there is still one venue hosting quality tournaments on a regular basis - Dragon's Lair at Brentwood in Essex.
This was the fifth event out of nine being held this year - with teams competing for trophies on the day and also working towards becoming series champions in December.
Plenty of regular teams put in an appearance, together with some new faces - possibly attracted by the move away from woodland games into the 'mainstream' - with all games played on either Sup Air or concept fields. No more crawling through muddy ditches, it was an all-out bunkering fest!
The 12 teams taking part were split into two divisions of six for the morning session. Following those five games all teams were to be reseeded over lunchtime, with another 5 games in the rejigged divisions determining the final placings.
Trophies for the teams takings 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in both divisions were supplied by Trophyland Wickford.
During the morning session the Redskins looked determined to put their poor showings at the previous two legs behind them, racking up 5 straight maxes in Division A, while the Saxon Raiders led Division B with 4 maxes.
With the scores tallied over the lunchtime break, the top six teams were placed into Division A, with the remaining six in Division B.
The divisions for the afternoon were:
Division A: Redskins, Saxon Raiders, Kestrels 'A', Jesters, Legion 'A', Legion 'B'
Division B: Redskins Braves, Kestrels 'B', Halloween, SC Tremmor, Cougars, UK Blaze.
Although neither team realised it at the time, the deciding game in Division A was the first one between the Redskins and Saxon Raiders.
The Raiders put together some excellent moves, royally stuffing a bemused Redskins. The Raiders never looked back, maxing their remaining 4 games to win the division, while the Redskins managed to pull themselves back together to max their remaining 4 games as well, taking second, with the Kestrels taking third.
Kestrels 'B' were the class act in Division B, taking first in style. Redskins Braves emulated their namesakes, claiming second, while the third spot was occupied by UK Blaze.
It was another excellent tournament organised by Ray and Jean and special mention has to be made of the quality of marshalling which everyone agreed was excellent all day. Improvements to the way the day was organised - with chrono stations next to the fields, made this the best of the series so far.
Next tournament in the series is Sunday August 3rd, teams wanting to take part can call Ray or Jean on 01708 765036.
