Hi, as your probaly aware as well as providing air systems for events we test cylinders,
we have just had it confirmed by the Health and Safety Executive that it is illegle to test DOT spec cylinders in the UK and the importation has been stopped, it is also ilegle to fill one of these cylinders which is as we thought. i know tis is bad news for some people but you have to put safety first and we will not be filling any Dot spec cylinders.
any questions call me on 07980 867110

regards

Better Things 2 Do!
eekkk this is all giving me a headache  - I wish someone would just come up with a final world wide standard - the fact that the rest of europe/world us DOT systems and only this speck called the UK that doesn't, kinda shows how we get given the nasty as with many other things here :(.

It's certain suppliers of air systems in the UK who need a good slapping.

When Sosta first starting shipping Air America systems into the UK (9 years ago!), everyone knew that DOT bottles were illegal to use in the UK, so he made sure that they were HSE stamped bottles. The team I played for at the time were one of the first to go completely over to air and all of our bottles are HSE (and still in use today!). Despite that, some suppliers still take advantage of consumer ignorance and fob off UK customers with DOT bottles, which is really dodgy in my book.

The bottles themselves may be identical, but without that label, they're a waste of money.

If.

Guys, what happens at the next event, IF someone turns up with a DOT bottle, not knowing that you will not fill it?
Are you going to refuse, or give them a chance and fill it this once, making sure they change it for the next event.
And is it ilegal to fill the DOT bottle even if it is in test?
Would you fill a DOT bottle for a visiting player from overseas?
If it is ilegal to fill and use DOT bottles in the U.K. How did players fill air for Campaign?
Just a few questions for better informed....to answer.

A few answers:

If somebody turns up with a non-HSE bottle don't let them fill it even once as this invalidates your insurance

Yes it is illegal even if the bottle is in test

Non UK residents (temporary visitors) may use and fill DOT bottles in the UK which is how visiting teams at Campaign (for example) were permitted to use their own cylinders. If you are a native however you must have an HSE bottle

Ok how about this then?

Just trying to cover all the angles..
If I get the guys to fill my dive tank(its in test etc.) and i then fill a DOT bottle, from the dive tank. Am i breaking any laws?

Got to add, that i do not have a DOT bottle, just trying to see if there is any way around the issue.Just in case we have a situation in the future where someone is stopped playing because they do not have access to the internet. And did not know about not using DOT bottles.

If its a saftey issue it seems crazy that someone from overseas can fill a DOT botle legally, is the risk still not there anymore simply because of who a person is and where they come from??

Im sure if you did that you could get away with it, but it would invalidate any life insurance you may have :D

Yes but then it's your own responsibility not someone elses. I think however that the chances are if there were an accident however the Insurance people might seek to invalidate the site insurance for not stopping you

The fact that DOT is not allowed is not new. I think the reason it is not universally known is because nobody has ever really bothered to make an issue of it.

Ignorance unfortunately is no defence under the Law :-(
