i e-mailed rekka to find out if i could get them to test my DOt bottle to HSE standard. but im confused by the response...

I wrote to them :

"> i am trying to alleviate some confusion. I have been given a DOT tested
> bottle with 1 year remaining of its test. of course it needs to be tested
to
> HSE standard if i wish to use it.
> are you capable of testing DOT test air bottles to HSE standard?
> it is a 1.1L 4500 psi fibre wrapped bottle."

However they wrote back:

"That bottle is ok to use in the uk"

I threw a wobbly about campaign and the selling of DOT bottles to UK players. but now im being told by a uk retailer that its fine to use DOT bottles in the uk.

Please explain!!
Who has the final word on this kind of issue, and what is it?

Maybe its got something to do with this post by Eric The Troll

I have just put my ally dive bottle in for testing and the law has changed.

To bring us into line with Europe:

From now on all type c and Steel bottles will get 5 year hydros on a retest, the visual will be every 2.5 years.

Type a and b ally cylinders need to be tested with Visual Plus every 2.5 years. Part of Visual Plus testing is a hydro test, in other words you have to have these type of ally bottles hydro tested every 2.5 years.

Gun Bottles - They is no legal requirement for a DRY ONLY bottle to be tested, the definition of DRY ONLY is a bottle as far as I can find, is where the valve has a pressure guage mounted directly to it, and the bottle is manufactured in aluminium.

Bottles under .5ltr do not require testing.

Your current test is valid to the expiration date as normal, you can not just extend your test to the above limits.

This info has come from the dive shop I use, and what I have been able to find on the internet. It is supplied as is and is without prejudice. Any errors should be noted and an Admin of the board asked to correct this post.

As a personal note:
Just because there is no legal requirement to test gun bottles, do you want to walk around with a hand grenade next to your face !
But I'm not to sure as I'm trying to get my head round this HPA thing anyway before I buy my air system, but if it is a case of you being allowed to use DOT bottles hopefully the prices of HSE bottles will fall when people realise they can get the bottles from the states for nearly half the price of here?

yeah i read that, re read it, and still not sure.
i think it says that hpa bottles in paintball DONT NEED TESTING and im sure that cant be right.
if they are to be tested at what standard?? does it have to be HSE or is DOT now acceptable.
It does say "To bring us into line with Europe:" and europe also uses DOT. so im confused.

Yeah could be something to do with the European Law thing because it does seem we are the only ones using the HSE system and the rest of Europe uses DOT (correct me if i'm wrong) so it could be a case that DOT bottles may be made legal.

But it would be good if someone in the know could clear this up - especially as I'm about to buy an HPA system.

I've been reading up on this and according to UKPSF it is against the law to use an out of date bottle or a DOT bottle unless you are a visiting player to the country. Now why should a brittish player not be allowed to use a DOT bottle yet an american or any european player can????? I have heard as sypher said that the law is changing so that DOT bottles can be used by brittish players.

The thing is that HSE (health and Saftey Executive) is a body that lays down standards relating to ALL health and safety matters DOT (Department Of Trade ( i think?) is just the gouverning body in europe that gouverns health and safety. there standards will probably be the same the only diffrence is the name stamped on the bottle.

But untill some one decides exactly what can and cant be used you better of using a HSE bottle the last thing you need is to turn up to a tourny with a DOT bottle and being told you cant use it just becuase you were born in the wrong country!!!!

DOT is the US equivalent of the HSE (or maybe the US Dept of Trade?, anyway, it's American). The UK Department of Trade & Industry is the DTI.

Already on the case actually Liz ;)

I got a private message a couple of days ago to come in on this thread, had a look at the quote from Eric the Troll, and decided to check it out before jumping in half-cocked

Personally I am not aware of any changes in UK regulations as regards DOT bottles but I have emailed the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) for official clarification

As soon as they let me know I'll post what they have to say on the matter okay?
