Does nickel plating protect?

Well, does it? I want to know if nickel plating actually protects the marker? Does it prevent it from getting scratched all to hell, or is anodizing the whole thing silver to a better job of protection? Thanks.

The finish on my Chrome Cocker does seem a bit tougher than my ano'd cocker... however, it might just be me imagining it!
