Tell them it is used at under 300 feet per second (fps) as required by standard paintball saftey standards. This is under the legal requirement of an air gun (that is 12ft/lbs or 330fps).

What do customs what to do with it?

He might have bought it 2nd hand from PBNation ?

They want to know about the muzzle energy - it needs to be below 12 ft/lbs or it woudl require a firewarms certificate.

the formula is (fps x fps x ball weight / 450240) but I don't quite know what unit the ball weight would be in.

looks like paintball markers tend to have a muzzle energy of about 13-15 Joules - so below the legal limit for an air rifle.

Whenever I've had stuff stopped before they want a velocity delceration. Just send them and email with this

Dear Sir,

The paintball marker held by "carrier / HM customs" and ordered by myself from "insert shop" has a barrel velocity not exceeding 300 feet per second with a 4g projectile.

I trust that this is in order, and if you require any further information, please contact me again.

Yours faithfully,

your name

Should be everything they need to know.
