I guess I'm relatively new to paintball so tend to make up for lack of experience with lots of browsing on the different sites and forums to pick up hints and tips. This leads to reading alot of opinions about certain markers being inherently more accurate than others (eg, cockers vs angels), closed vs open bolt arguments and so on, and this has got me thinking (yes dangerous I know ;) )

On the issue of shooting distance, then assuming no spin is deliberately imparted on the ball (like with the Flatline barrel) then surely this is dependant upon the speed that the ball leaves the barrel. Assuming the same trajectory, then wouldn't a cocker (for example) shoot the same distance as a spider, assuming each ball left the barrel at 300 fps?

Regarding accuracy it seems accepted and proven that this is down to a good match between paint used and your barrel bore. So again, assuming the same paint was used in the same barrel, would 2 entirely different markers shoot with the same accuracy?

Am I being a bit nieve or are there other factors which I'm not taking into consideration.

There is a bit of difference involved, and trajectories are not at all always identical. I don't think anyone has pinned down any absolutes on the matter except that quality paint and good paint to barrel match make for the best accuracy out of any gun. The rest is very vocally debated by some and left alone by others. There's always the physics arguement points, but honestly the field results always show something is there that isn't 100% science. I don't have a solid theory together on it yet, but something is at work that isn't explained in the usual repeated parrot dribble.

Holding the gun

Seems to me, its how you shoot.

Ive seen guys with Angels, fan the trigger, and shoot fast.
Ive seen guys with Cockers, shoot slower, but hold the gun better, and hit the target.

On the other hand, i shoot an Angel, and also have an Impulse.
The Impulse ive only had for a while, but seems more accurate.
I run both with a Freak system. And try not to fire any without holding them with both hands.

I have also had a go of a cocker, with the Racegun grip. It ROCKS , was accurate, and had a high rate of fire.

I think like most things, its up to each person to find the gun and system that works best for you.

One other thing, i have a 14" and a 18" barrel. But can see no differance, when using them. Apart from, its easier to move around with the smaller one.

The physics says there should be no difference, but in practice there seems to be. Part of it (the accuracy at least) can be down to how familiar one is with a marker, & how well it suits you. However, explain this scenario below.
I've been playing back with a Dark Angel with a Freak for about a year now. On Sunday at STB I borrowed a friend's Impulse with AA 2-piece barrel. Now in theory this shouldn't have been quite as accurate as the Angel as I couldn't try to get an exact bore to paint match. I found that in every game my accuracy was improved as was my range, both significantly. You can't even put this down to familiarity or marker type, as they are both electros, no bolt coming back into my face (part of the reason I can't get on with Cockers), and that's only the second time I've ever used an Impulse (first time for a year, & this one was set up slightly differently).
Go figure!

For my money - the consistency of the marker (ie same FPS every single shot) and good paint to barrel fit, are the over riding factors. The other points made regarding the balance of markers and their air supplies, and how each player shoots (stance, ability etc) may mean that certain players find they are more accurate with a particular type of marker.

Having said all of that, the only way to improve on your accuracy is trigger time - mundane snap shooting drills are second to none and do start to pay off - get the set up that suits you as consistent as you can - then practise - practise - practise some more.

now I have read all this too.... barrel/paint match etc etc etc

so in theory, my Spyder with freak barrel should shoot the same as my Cocker with the same freak barrel....

It doesnt.

The cocker out ranges and is far more accurate than the spyder.. the only thing I can put it down to is consistency of FPS
