difference in a barrel

Oh, and to answer your question, a ported barrel makes for an easier transition from the ball being fully enclosed in the barrel, to the ball flying through the air.

Basically a paintball is propelled down the barrel by an expanding cloud of gas. At the moment the ball exits the barrel, this gas can expand to it's maximum volume, meaning it gives the ball a little nudge. Since this happens outside the barrel, it means that the ball can pretty much be knocked in any direction. Barrel porting enables the gas to expand to it's maximum volume whilst the ball is still being guided in a straight line by the confines of the barrel. End result (in theory at least) is greater accuracy. Hence most of the best barrels are ported.

The downside is that you will need to use a slightly higher pressure to get the same FPS when using a ported barrel, but the difference is minimal.

it should also be noted that where the porting starts is an important characteristic - the closer to your gun the porting starts, the quieter the barrel but the more gas needed per shot, and vice versa for short porting. Also, the angle of the porting (apparently) makes a difference, though I'm pretty sure this is minimal.
