DW Series 3 – Episode 10 - Nov 28th 2010

“The Ultimatum”

A sharp and frosty November morning saw the United States Diamond Exports and the Hoffmann Minex Corporation amass their forces for the final confrontation of the year, ready to brave the cold and harsh terrain in an attempt to steal the victory...
Both armies were relieved as they recovered from the mystical aftermath of the previous conflict and saw the curses lifted from the Corimbian lands, deploying their forces across the entire site, ready for the final battle of the series and potentially a place in history for the USDE – with the possibility of being the first ever ‘treble winners’ of the Diamond Wars series - and they needed no reminding that the HMC were currently in the lead...
The morning saw both corporations steam forward and attack one another across the map, vying for the upper hand and desperate to secure an early lead, yet neither team edged forward in what seemed to be a perfect stand-off! The core missions were initially accomplished, with the USDE managing to disrupt the HMC’s run of success, only to suffer the same fate at the hands of the Hoffmann troops before composing themselves and pressing on with the destruction of key Hofmann bunkers. In return the HMC took out USDE sentry towers, but that was their last core mission success for the morning as the USDE held their ground and defended well for the rest of the morning... Unfortunately neither Spec Ops team could claim the same success as their compatriots, as both teams failed to accomplish their missions, as did the Recon teams, although the sniper teams did have some degree of success. US scout snipers successfully eliminated two targets, whilst the HMC sniper division took out three of their contracted targets and also vigilantly defended the Crater Lake region against intruders. A gap started to emerge as the lunch time armistice approached, with the USDE edging ahead in terms of dominating the hold & control points in key locations, restricting the HMC’s movement and attacking potential and securing a lead as the armies stood down for lunch.
As the conflict resumed it was clear that the USDE held the upper hand.... the question on everyone’s lips was “have they done enough to win it back?”... If there was any doubt as to whether they were capable or not - it was short lived! The USDE took the afternoon by storm, out-classing and out-gunning the HMC for the most part – exceptions such as Graham Dorrell, for his outstanding killstreak on gunship, kept the USDE at bay briefly but failed to break the line and do enough to disrupt the ‘shock-and-awe’ that the USDE had brought to the field for the occasion! The USDE pushed ahead with their core missions, maintaining their lead over the Hoffmann Minex Corporation and upping the ante even further... Recon squads from both camps found form and kept the HQs informed, but once again the USDE shone through completing all of their recon tasks, as did the scout sniper detail – with the exception of one heavily defended target in the HMC bunker complex. The US sniper success continued with the successful assassination of a high value executive target near to the Temple and with the tactical elimination of the HMC sniper dug in around the Crater Lake, giving way to the capture of the hold and control point in the region. It was domination of the hold and control points and key locations which had pushed the USDE ahead during the morning, and it proved to be the finishing move for the HMC in the afternoon. Out of the smoke and chaos of the final conflict across the Trenches emerged a lone USDE trooper, clearly identifiable by his unique mask and dreadlock combo, carrying a small crate. This was no diamond ore crate or weapons case... Darren had recovered something far more valuable (and feared) than any cursed diamonds of old... Shaman Shaka’s sacred skull had been found and would need to be presented to Shaka and his General – Colimbo!
As the conflict drew to a close the armies gathered in the base camp to learn their fate – high-ranking personnel from both teams were buzzing with anticipation and attempting to make last-minute calculations to see which corporation would emerge as the most profitable...
It was the most difficult situation to describe – the HMC had a healthy lead coming into this final episode, whereas the USDE had surely triumphed on the day... All that remained was to see who had triumphed – or was it? The scores were announced: the USDE had triumphed on the day, leading the HMC with $598mil (USDE) to $431mil (HMC). It was getting intense, a combination of the cold, the mulled wine, the day’s conflict and a lack of mathematical motivation meant that no-one knew who had come out on top overall.... and to believe there was only $7 million separating the two corporations total takings for 2010! Congratulations to the HMC who triumphed overall with a total of $5.316bil, followed closely by the USDE with $5.309bil.
It appeared that was not all.... General Colimbo was present with his shaman Shakka Demons, demanding the return of the sacred skull. The General was willing to offer any amount of diamonds or blood dollars to ensure its return to its rightful owners! The USDE high-command responded to the General’s generous offer with this weighty ultimatum:
“Keep it, it’s yours. In return all we ask is that you rid the Corimbe of the Hoffmann menace and allow us to continue our research in peace”...
