Best defensive tactic IMO is snap shooting. Make sure when you pop out from a bunker you don't just sidestep - lean the bare minimum of your body across (half of head, marker and elbow). Make sure to keep your elbow close in to your body so it's not sticking out - should be able to keep it tucked behind the air canister.
Basically gives you as low of a profile as possible, making you much less likely to be hit. Try to make sure you swap sides often too so your not always appearing at the same spot and being predictable.
