at my home , i have an ethernet cable going from my dad's computer downstairs going up to my room, this worked for some time until recently my router broke, i bought a new router (exact same type) but now it only seems to let one computer and not both have a connection, i can swap the ethernet cable to either computer and the it worksto what ever computer we choose but not both at the same time

we ve tried every combination of wires just incase a wire was in a wrong place but i been told maybe it could be that the connection only recognoses the old router or somewthing like that

anyone know what i am doing wrong here?

thanx in advance

Pebble sounds from your brief description that you are using your or your dads pc as the connection point to the router. Effectively using the pc as another router but for your local network. Sounds like the new router is not recognising the second pc as valid connection on your home network.

Check your router manufacturers website for details on setting your router to allow through traffic. The easiest method would be to set it to allow all traffic on the local network. And then connect both pc's in to the router, unless it only has the one ethernet port and then your best bet is to go get a small ethernet hub.

Cheap, cheerful, and easy to plug in. You plug one end in to the router, and the cat 5 ethernet cables from both pc's in to the other end. :)

Are you saying. that originally, your Ethernet cable, plugged into the downstairs PC, which then plugged into the router, or they both plugged into the router?
Is it a Cable (rather than BT type) connection?
How many Ethernet ports on the router?
Are both computers trying to use the same IP address?
Did you setup fixed IP address for Limewire or similar on your PC?

Might be blaitent, but it could just be the router.. i've had friends in the past who have had fault ports on routers, try using a diff router and if the same problem occurs, then try diff ethernet cables, or whichever is cheapest

Depending on your connection type, can make slight differences with routers, but nothing i can see on a major level. Should be simple enough

Cant give a bigger diagnosis as the info you gave is rather basic :)

cheers

made / model of router, and a rough idea of you setup.

broadband provided by cable or phone

All decent routers have a WAN port, in the cable setup it will be an ethernet port, on an ADSL router its an RJ11 jack. Along from these ports you tent to find upto 4 ethernet ports.

without knowing your setup, my general advice would be to connect both PC's to the ethernet ports, and make sure both yous PC network settings are set to Automatic, on Windows XP you do this by right clicking "my network places" > "properties" choose right click "local area connection" and choose "properties" then highlight "TCP/IP" and press the "properties button" make sure the radio buttons for "obtain an IP Address automaticlly" and "Obtain DNS server automatically" are selected and click ok.

this will make the PC's ask the router for a network address and establish itself as the gateway to the internet. most routers work in this way by default.

hope this helps, if not give me a bit more to work with.

ok that helps, the belkin will be designed to work with your cable connection automaticly via the WAN port, and provided all your PC's are in automatic IP mode they will get their addresses from the routers pool of numbers and all should work fine.

can you further explain the ethernet cable running from your dad's pc to yours, was it direct or did you both just plug into the router?

both just plug into router, mayb e its the port or something

i put the connection to both compters to see if it both computers have the same IP address's which obviously will be a proble, cus i thought the router was jiust using only one address

but they have different ip address's so the problem still remains

thanx for help once again
