I'm a complete newbie and would like to ask the moderators and more experienced users how they got started and if there are any tips I should learn before I go balling? What do they find to be the biggest thrill?

I think the biggest thrill in Paintballing
(Well for me anyway)
Knowing you are out number 1-10 being the only one left on your team and running out shooting off a full hopper of paintballs and hen being shot 10 to 20 times in the back, then when i go home and go to bed and wake up the following mornin and i find that im covered in brusies, Thats the best thing in my eyes coz then you know you got your moneys worth.

Hello Minkle, welcome to the boards.
I got started like a lot of people by going to a mates stag do, he did a stag run in front of 15 of us (8 site tippmans 4 angels 2 cockers and an impy OUCH). I then started working on the weekends at my local site as a marshall, since then I've been hooked. Tips? Firstly listen to the marshall's instructions, they are there for YOUR saftey and you will go home a lot happier if you are in roughly the same shape as when u arrived
Communicate with your mates, the more u tell each other what u want/are about to do the better u will work as a team ergo the more chance u have of winning. Move like the wind, go for the flag (if applicable) and for gods sake don't be a wuss, get shot you'll love it honest Biggest thrill? Like Dude being well out numberd and going on a "suicide" run and it comes off...fantastic.Have fun

listen to what the marshalls tell you. point the noisy end of the gun toward the other team and have a good day out.
i guarantee you will bore your other half to death with stories about your day out...and you will more than likely rope a few mates into going again asap.

Play as much as you can. The more you play the better you will get.
Speak to the marshal's, they may well know of a team local to you and just invite yourself to a training day, thats what I did.

I don't know about Bury mate but theres one in Necton out near Swaffham. Let me know if you want there number

The start seems to take forever,
Just try to play as often as you can, increase your feel for the game and try to play on a couple of different sites. A scan through the yello wpages should produce one or two near you.
Then get yourself back on the boards and tell us all how much you rocked/sucked. One of the best parts of P8ball is hearing everyones nutty stories. After you've played a coupla times, then have a look at eq and think if you want/need to buy anything......and never, EVER stop learning.
I turned up to a punter day thinking I knew it all having played a few times, and promptly got whipped in the first two games by a bunch of excited kids. Lesson #1 learned! They did get tagged by me next game, and I wasn't such a pain in the ass know-it-all afterwards (I hope).
