Winter is coming and my long johns are dirty...

Erm.. no! I want to ask about thermal lenses (JT Spectra if it makes a difference) I have bits of dust and dirt on the inside of my lenses and I know the instructions say not to touch the inside so what should I do to get rid of the grime? Should I just run them under the tap or Use lens cleaner spray?

If its on the inside between the two lenses then get a new lense. If its grime on the eye side of the goggles then clean it with the spray. :)

Never take thermal lenses apart i.e. don't break the black foam barrer that holds the two together.

If its on the inside where you cant get to it, get a new lense. Its worth the cost for safety.

why do people think taking the thin layer of the goggles off is dangerous???? the front is standard lexan, which can withstand a 12 gauge shotgun blast, the thin plastic has nothing to do with safety except it gives a double glazing affect with helps to stop condensation, so if u bugger it up, it is no less safe than it was before

I dunno LJ - maybe cos I would rather spend £20 on a new lense than have an increased risk of my goggle lense failing:rolleyes:

Granted that the chance of weakening the lense is small, however the number of 'Ballers that manage to scratch/tear/otherwise damage their kit when cleaning/maintaining it, I personally don't want to take the chance.

BTW didn't you post up in another thread about your spare goggles that were 'heavily scratched'? Now they ARE unsafe, even for Reffing (cos we all know that Refs never get shot right:rolleyes: )

well i know 2 people where their spectra lenses have cracked down the center, because of a shot (yes they were old). so that goes to show, dont be too sure about the strength of lenses.

I had a spectra lense snap at one of the tabs where it fits into the frame...needless to say it went out into the bin. The worrying thing was that the rest of the lense looked as though it was in pretty good nick, so there was no real way to tell.

The lenses weaken and crack down the middle due to the sides being pressed together when they are stored, for instance in the boot of your car. I have had it happen to me and seen it happen loads of times. I always keep my goggles on the seat where they wont get crushed.

Here's my 2p worth.

The lens inside the thermal, is only there for the thermal effect. It has no effect on the safety or strength of the lens. After a fair bit of use the paint residue in the frame of the goggles, attacks the lexan making it brittle. As well as the squashing effect, it causes the lens to crack.
Years ago a friend of mine had a set of vents, remember them, we made a thermal lens for them and it worked great. He eventually changed to a set of JT's, so guys don't throw those good lenses away just because the inside lens gets dirty, repair them.
