I picked myself a proto rail from here for £100 and it's definitely been worth the money. As a beginner gun for tournies you can't go wrong in my own opinion. nice and quiet, quite smooth, air efficiency isn't a strong point and it is quite battery hungry as well. Quite easy to maintain as well, just quite a few o-rings to lube on the bolt, but the eye pipe and steel braided line make it easy to maintain and generally problem free. Well worth it in my opinion, and gives you a chance to spend your money on training and paint and build on your skills.

the first gun I ever owned was a 2011 proto rail. It was a perfect beginners gun imo. it had all the benefits of a high end marker, (like break beam eyes) but without the price tag you might find isn't suitable for you at this time. That being said, you can pick up a DM9, or Geo1 for a very good price these days that a proto rail cost me NEW. So i'd highly recommend going down that route, you can find some pretty reputable sellers on these forums.

well not to be negative but i'd advise against anything made my Smart Parts, GOG, or dangerous power; they're the ones to stay away from . invert minis are ok, but if i was going to get one, i'd save up the extra money and get an axe. in fact imo, i'd save up about £200-£300 and get a mid range gun such as an Etek, Axe, etha. or an older high end gun such as an ego 7/8 or a geo or old DM/NT etc.

if you've still got to purchase an air tank and hopper, a rail will save you a lot of money to put towards those things. As well as that, having a cheaper marker to start with will allow you to go to a few walk ons try out fellow paintballers markers (if you ask nicely :p) and then you can find out what you prefer before spending over £200/300+

Its all about personal preference, choose a gun that feels right to hold (ask about at events to hold or try different guns), thats cheap for you (price is down to you), and that isnt that hard to keep maintained (you dont want to be lost when you strip it down to clean).

if you can get the money, your best bet would be either an ego 05/06 or an etek 1/2, invert mini is ok but you have to strip the marker down to get to the bolt whereas with the previous guns i mentioned, the bolt and breach are easy to get to, you'll see what i mean when you hold one or see one up close. Watch what your buying, read the descriptions on them properly and always ask any questions if your not happy/sure on anything. If in doubt, ask in the buying and selling queries section in the classifieds, have fun.

i started playing about a month ago and brought an Ion to start but after holding and playing with a few ego's at walk-ons I soon decided to upgrade so I am about to buy an etek to with a star frame for just over £200 so there is definately some deals out there.....

Although I would definitely suggest going and seeing what marker feels right for you or you will end up upgrading before long.

I started with an Etek 3 and my brother has a Invert Mini. The Mini is an absolutely awesome gun for a beginner extremely easy to strip down and easy to understand when you have problems. The Mini is very light weight and can easily keep up with the Etek.

I love my Etek but I secretly love the Mini more :p. Just a very well designed simple gun never misses a beat even has a filter on the asa to stop muck getting inside the gun which the Etek doesnt.

If you get a Mini just get a recent generation one they constantly upgrade it nowt wrong with the old ones but the little tweaks they have done just make it even better.
