CPX!!!
Well, it was a good tournament...lots of fun, lots of good play, lots of teams, varied fields...all in all, we had a great time.
We played very well...I'm pleased with that, but at the same time somewhat disappointed not to have brought home the 'Cup. We were in control of our own destiny going into our last round of play (against a team we had double-tapped in the semis) but, well, the best way I can describe it is to say that we "choked."
Still, I was very pleased with my guys' play. It was about as thrown-together a 5-man team as you could get. None of us had ever played 5-man together before. There were two players from Adrenalin 2, two from Adrenalin, and one player I knew in Arkansas that we were able to pick up at the last minute just to field a full team.
The tournament itself had its share of hitches, but I strongly disagree with some of the bad-mouthing it seems to be getting elsewhere. I felt as though the reffing, which AT TIMES left a little bit to be desired early in the event, improved noticeably as the tournament progressed...this tells me that the refs were making a concerted effort to do a damn good job, and deserve recognition for their hard work. The start of the event was delayed Saturday morning due to a team from each division calling in to say they wouldn't be there. To Forest's credit, rather than just say "OK everyone who plays them gets a 'bye'," he took the time to re-work the schedule so that people could PLAY PAINTBALL (which is why we're there, right???). The prelims still finished with daylight to spare. The fields were varied...two mounds fields, two hyperball fields, and two airball fields. The mounds fields were a tad bit large for 5-man (more true of field #1 than field #4), but they were still a lot of fun to play and added some extra spice and flavor to the event.
Eric Zorn of EZ Paintball, who puts on the Memphis Indoor every year, handled the air and it was fantastic! With the exception of one glitch Saturday morning, there was never a wait for air and it was "pop on, push a button, pop off" just like we've come to love in the NPPL. I heard several complaints about the paint 'cause it was seriously brittle...but I had absolutely nothing but love for it, which I credit to my VISION IMPULSE which absolutely rocks! I didn't break a 'ball all weekend long and I shot a LOT of paint.
I do feel a bit confused with the specific mention of "Angels" and "E-mags" in the promotional posts made on boards such as WARPIG, since neither of those items were on the actual prize list that teams chose from on Sunday...but still, the prize list WAS extensive and plenty of 'guns went home. I could care less about it myself, but I know it was an issue for some people which is why I bring it up.
All in all, a damn good event and I'm already looking forward to next year! TJ, next time you decide to pull away from a team at the last min I suggest you help us find a replacement! It was damn hard to get someone on such short notice!!!
Lotsa love to all,
~J~
