Okay - new topic for discussion.

Looking for rational arguments both for and against the formats of dual and centre flag in tournament play. The reason - New Zealand has traditionally been dual flag - but there is an element that is pushing for a move towards centre.

Interested to read your thoughts here .....

I have tried both the big advantage with centre flag is a quick break out looking for the grab ( flag grab usually brings a wadge of points) this can make for some entertaining and quick games. Over all I don't actually have a preferance between the two, both are fun...........
not sure if that helps....

A big factor has to be parity with the rest of the world. The big US series are currently 2 flag as is the Millennium series, so staying dual flag would mean playing on the same terms - a big plus point if we ever get the standard international rules sorted out.
On the other hand centre flag does tend to lead to some very exciting ball being played, though I feel we would need slightly larger fields than the current European Sup'air usually is to make it a bit harder to reach the flag off the break.

A format that used to work in the woods was 3 flag - a centre flag giving points for the first grab AND base flags giving hang points, but I'm not sure how well that would work in the arenas.

Since I've never played center-flag, I was wondering if the break-outs tend to go differently. Since the flag is so much closer, do people tend to get more ballsy and make a run straight for the flag? Who all has played center-flag?

Yes, you get all the mad loonys trying for the grab off the break. They go on the theory that the very high chance of losing the flag grabber is worth it 'cause of the big points you're guaranteed for first grab even if you're taken out 2 seconds later. I've actually seen opposing front players collide at the flag as they both gone for it. As a back player, I'm above all this & just stand there sweetspotting the flag area :D
