Important info on High Pressure Air Bottles
As many people will be aware a new CE apporved high pressure air bottle has just come out (see the shop).
Until now only HSE approved bottles were legal in the UK. Since the new CE bottles came out there has been a lot of confusion on other forums as to what is legal and what is not and obviously people with existing bottles are becoming worried and people wanting to buy air bottles are wondering what the situation is.
To try and give everyone some kind of real info and not BS as there is flying around at the moment, we contacted North Yorkshire Trading Standards for clarification. Part of their reply is as follows
Just to follow up yesterday's discussion re CO2 bottles - The reason you will have started getting CE marked bottles is that there is a piece of legislation called the Pressure Equipment Regulations 1999 which came fully into force in May 2002. Between this and the Simple Pressure Vessels (Safety) Regulations 1991 all CO2 and other such bottles will be covered. SPV(S)R relates to air or nitrogen filled bottles. PER applies to the others. One reason why you might not see a CE mark on every bottle is that marking is required when a product is first 'placed on the market'. If bottles are being refilled or reused they might have been placed on the market prior to the legislation coming into force. Any products you are supplied new should be CE marked. If you think there are problems with certain brands/suppliers please let me know and I'll follow it up.
So what does this exactly mean. Well in a nutshell, if you have an existing HSE bottle, you should be fine for the moment. If you are buying a new bottle then it must be CE approved. If you find a shop that is still selling the old HSE bottles then they may be breaking the law and should be reported to the Trading Standards people on (01609 768600).
I hope that this clears things up for everyone.
