Buying from the USA

i have been looking at american websites and it is cheaper to buy from there but then you have postage cost and this is what i am wondering. do i have to pay import duty or tax or some S**T like that?

Is it a good idea or a bad idea and is there any extra costs apart from the postage and price of equipment??
