Just bought a new 48 cu in 3000 psi PMI bottle( Alloy)
Charged it for first time to 3000 psi
1 day later found it had blown the 1800psi burst disk?
Q Why?
I removed both disks to see which one had gone
Q Where does the 5k sit top or bottom hole, as I didn't note the difference until after removal
Q Do these blow off all the time as i can't see why it would do this a day later.

HI Mate,

Hmm... air tanks are not something you want to start messing around with unless you know what your doing. You could try and give planeteclipse.com a call.

Or you could speak to Tom Allen he’s a man who is in the know with regards to all things air related.

paging Tom Allen!!!!

Rang PMI UK rep said it has been a problem on some tanks, It only happens from time to time, sending me a new Disk free, Changing the disk isn't rocket science, (ground crew on Jets for 10 years)

Faulty Reg's

I was told by the rep that a Brand new tank filled, may leak into the reg and blow the 1.8k reg on first fill. It was a regular problem, but as all the tanks in question are now in use that it shouldn't happen again.Once regs have been used and exercised this problem will not happen again, PMI sent me replacement Disk and this has not re-occured.

The 5000 psi disc sould be placed nearer the bottle. Putting one in place of the regulator burst disc (top one closest to the output end of the reg) can damage your gun. Its designed to blow before your gun does if the output pressure suddenly increases.

The site i work for uses 3000psi PMI systems and we found that getting crud in the bottle when filling can cause this disc to blow as a tiny piece of grit can get into the regulator washer stack stopping it from functioning properly. If you don't already, then fit a dust cap to your fill nipple as this can save a lot of hassle in the long run. Don't be tempted to try and take it apart to fix it yourself tho. I've been trained but i still won't do it, there is a lot can go wrong. Ever seen a car tyre blow? Thats only 30 psi, not 3000.

They can blow at the most inappropiate moments. I've known them go off during games, in saftey speeches (CO2 bottles too, they really caused a stir) and once when ppl were filling up at a tournament. Never seen so may hairy, lairy men dive for cover, many of them thought the compressor had blown up :)
