To release your domain name you need to release the IPS tags. This isn't as easy as it may seem! The registering company will need to release the tags, and as the guy seems to have had trouble with his site it may take some time for this to happen.

You can try to contact Nominet to claim your domain name, just make sure you have something like a 123reg.com account set up to move the domain to.

Gaz - it all depends on who 'owns' the domain name. Not all ISP's register your domain name under your name (they do it under their own - one way of making sure you stay with them).

Moving domain names is not as easy as changing the IPS tag either - some ISP's also make a charge for this.

You can not change the IPS tag yourself - the person who currently hosts your domain is the one that has to change the tag.

But, before they can change the tag - they need to know what to change it to!

Confused yet?

Also, if your domain is in 'dispute' then the only avenue open is to call Nominet (the main domain regitrar). There will be a charge for this.

If you do manage to move your domain without any problems (by getting the IPS tag changed) then as you have a .com it can take a week before your domain is up and running on the new host!

If all this is b'lox to you - send me a pm - or give me a call if you still have my moby number (if not, I'll give it to you via pm).

And to think - I do this **** for a living :)

Here's Internic's take on it :

It's actually registered with publicdomainregistry.com and they have it registered under Skeets real name, so there should be no dispute as to the ownership of the domain.

It should be a simple case of changing the nameservers as the bti-hosting ones have apparantly gone away.

Mr Dane is quite right. When you register a domain you should give your real details - and request for them to be with-held for the big wide world.

That way you can 'prove' who you are and not have everyone get your home number ;).

When anyone tries to find who you are - this happens :

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Registrant's address:
The registrant is a non-trading individual who has opted to have their
address omitted from the WHOIS service.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So always register domain names in your own name - rather then your businesses - that way it is YOUR domain - regardless.

And so endeth today's lesson ;)
