Is it possible that he's bought a marker and a bottom line, but has no macro/braided line to connect them?

A bottom line normally implies that you have an ASA mounted to your grip (or drop) that you screw your tank into. A hose (steel braided or macroline) connect the ASA to your guns' input (either directly to the gun itself or through a regulator or gas-through grip).
